OT: Worst announcer?

Post by giacfsp »

OK, the season is almost upon us. Already I've begun jonesing for football, and have been reading, watching and listening to everything I can find about the upcoming season. To wit: yesterday, I was listening to ESPN Radio as Mel Kiper, Jr. and someone named Amy Lawrence broke down the upcoming season for teams from the ACC and SEC. Amy Lawrence made some point, and Kiper chimed in with "if Beano Cook was here, he'd say 'not so fast, my friend!' Uh .... and Lee Corso would be right there with him."

Beano Cook? Are you kidding? I realize Mel has hair gel seeping into his brain and doesn't have room in his brain for anything else after memorizing (sometimes correctly) the 40-yard dash time for the 9th-string free safety at DeVry and ITT Tech. But isn't Lee Corso kind of the [deleted] Vitale of college basketball - the loudmouth who screams so much that many think he's "an expert." Personally, I think Beano Cook and Lee Corso are both idiots. But to be an ESPN EMPLOYEE and get them mixed up? That's hard to believe. (And who's the genius who decided Mel K. should be breaking down teams' prospects for the upcoming season? He's bad enough on the draft - he shouldn't have his brain taxed any further by asking him to analyze anything else.

So with that trainwreck as backdrop, who gets your vote?

The SMU radio guys should be on this list, should they not? There is the occassional classic combination of homerism and tongue-twistedness, if I ever heard it.

My vote would have to go to Craig Way. Mostly because if I'm tuning around to see what's on ESPN radio (before I had XM), and I heard Way's voice, I'd cringe because I damn sure am not in the mood for a Texas game on the radio.

Also because the HS All-Star game on Fox is interesting until I hear Way's voice, then I realize it'll be a who's headed to Texas love fest.

Got to disagree, jtstang. Rich Phillips and Craig Swann do a terrific job. The Aggie guy got on this list because he keeps referring to the A&M offense or defense as "we." I know he's employed by A&M, but ANNOUNCERS ARE NOT ON THE TEAM. Estridge sounds like every player the Frogs have will sidestep playing in the NFL and go straight to Canton, Ohio, for enshrinement, and apparently he thinks the Frogs' eighth-string punter would start on any other team in the country.

Good call, KAY .... Corso is horrible. Should have put Beano Cook on the list, too. How is THAT guy still getting a paycheck?

Just a little side note: If you ever want to hear the greatest sports radio announcer ever, visit the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in Waco and listen to the archived broadcasts of Kern Tips doing the SWC Game of the Week.

No contest, it's Dave South. I was listening to the game where Baylor beat A&M in overtime on A&M Radio a few years back and here was the winning call from South:

"Rolls out, fires"
(pauses for 15 or 20 seconds)
"They scored"
(pauses for over a minute)
"Good for them"
(pauses for at least 20 seconds)
"And that's it fellows"
(pauses for 30 seconds)
"Baylor wins"

I was listening to that, too. The crowd noise from Floyd Casey Stadium was great! I was laughing so hard I almost drove off the road!

Haha, yeah, the crowd noise was awesome, and South's state of shock was hilarious!

I agree Dave South is nauseating to the opposing team but at least he understands college football. Brent Musburger on the other hand has no business calling college football-absolutely the worst announcer of college football ever. Craig Way is excellent and will eventually become a legend.

Yes. Yes. Only if he's calling U.T. games.

Couldn't agree with you more, Stallion. It's one thing to hear him say "Adrian Peterson is the best running back in the country" or "there's no player in the country more exciting than Teddy Ginn." But Musberger could be covering a Temple/Penn showdown and would tell us that some Penn philosophy major is "the toughest linebacker you'll ever see." EVERY player he sees is the best in the world and EVERY team he sees (or at least those that win) is the best team alive. I understand announcers have to boost ratings with some enthusiasm for the game they're announcing, but he's pathetic. How he snuck in the door for bowl games, NBA Finals games or the World Cup is a huge mystery.

I guess Phillips is a serviceable play-by-play guy but Swann was a much better linebacker than he ever was a wordsmith.

Sorry, can't vote until Rich Phillips is added to the list. Pure radio anthrax.
