Splash hire

Post by CalallenStang »

While I think that Bennett still has time to save his job, we ought to be looking at possibilities of who should fill his position should our season continue to go down the tubes.

I propose Rick Neuheisel. http://www.baltimoreravens.com/includes ... rsonType=0

The guy is a big name (for the right AND wrong reasons, I realize) and a great coach. Plus, Orsini hired O'Leary, who had some baggage, at UCF, and that has worked out this far.

Me and another poster were talking about getting Neuheisel in here and from what he intimated from a conversation he had with Orsini at a function, Neuheisel probably wouldn't be considered by him. Not sure if it had to do with the NCAA tourney stuff(which i felt was his athletic dept.'s fault, not his) or just the perception of him. However, welcome to the Neuheisel band wagon. There's plenty of room.

Ok, so what's the wrong reason?

Somebody mentioned Butch Davis in another thread and I think he'd be a great hire...don't know if he'd be interested, but he'd definitley be a big name, a good recruiter, and he doesn't bring the baggage that Neuhesiel would. But I still think Neuheisel would be great- he's a proven winner

There's no way in hell we'd get O'leary with how well he's doing at UCF so far and I read an article that Butch Davis is interested in getting back into coaching . . .

How about PHIL BENNETT? There is no one more proficient at running the swinging gate. SERIOUSLY. He's pretty good at it. Really.

i don't think Butch Davis would come unless Lamar Hunt dangled such a huge wad of cash Butch couldn't say no. Butch has lived in Dallas before and hey if he won 7-8 games a year he would be the toast of the town. It's not like it would be @ USC/UT/Florida State/ Notre Dame pressure cookers where a couple of losses seems like a pitiful year.

those top rung coaches are not going to come unless we give them alot of money and alot of free reign.

the money is probably do-able, but i am not sure if we can over-come the entrenched academics that won't let a proven big name coach get the players he needs.

it sure would be fun to see SMU "shock the world" by hiring some huge name coach that everyone knows would "gettterdone"!

don't hold your breath.....but i do have a gut feeling Orsini is a different breed and might be better able to "fight the good fight" against the academics that hate/resent SMU athletics.

well, we have a "big name" hire in Matt Doherty. Let's see what he can do with the hoops program. He's certainly making some noise in the early going. If last night's game and this season cost Bennett his job, I do think Orsini will set his sights on a high profile coach, assuming the $$$ is there. Given the lack of support for SMU's athletic programs (I'm talking about the lack of attendance and the fact that less than 5% of our alumni contribute to the Mustang Club), it's going to take a handfull of wealthy alumni who REALLY care to fund the hiring of a proven, high profile coach to be the next guy to try and turn this train wreck around.

Because Ditka has sense and a cushy job at ESPN. No way he'd make that step down.

Isn't Mike Ditka approaching 70 years old?

How old would Ditka be before he had his very first freshman recruit class go all the way through and graduate?

I like and admire his football career but I'll pass on Ditka as the next SMU Football Coach.

Well, I mentioned Butch Davis, and if you go to the Basketball board and go back far enough, you'll find a post where I wondered openly "what about the guy who did well at Notre Dame, then North Carolina..."
