First Down, SMU...

Post by MrMustang1965 »

Got this email today from an SMU Mustang Club rep:

Our PA announcer will also start a new tradition at this week’s game. Every time SMU makes a first down he will say " First down SMU" and the crowd then says "MUSTANGS" and points in the direction we are going to score! Create some spirit!

I'll give it a shot. Would be cool if it catches on.

Isn't this the same thing people were making fun of in another thread because the ECU announcer does it?

It could be worse. I was at a game somewhere a few years ago (don't remember who/where...good impression it must've made) but I remember the PA announcer on multiple occasions saying "and now it's time for another KEY play"...and the expectation was that the crowd would start jingling their keys.

One thing that did work for ECU, I thought, was their bell tolling on third down. I think it worked well because they just rang the bell without saying anything cheesy about it. Perhaps 3rd down thunder would go over better if they just played the herd of Mustangs thundering across the prairie sound effect without saying anything.

I like that. Hoofbeats on 3rd down. It's not as cheesy as the other idea sounds.

If we want to really rip off ECU, let's just yell "Arrgh". But hey, try anything that might work. The Assistant AD for marketing was at the game last week. He might have liked it. Remember, SMU fans don't sing Peruna because the words are so stupid. If it comes off as something uncool, it will never get off the ground. Piping in "Shout" after a first down, might go further. They also piped in Black Sabbath's "Iron Man" at ECU between periods to get people "up". Might be something to try on Halloween and see what happens. The question that needs to be discussed is to what extent to we elbow out the band (and tradition) to pump in modern music like they do at Rangers, Stars and Mavericks games. Perhaps the band can do a swing rendition of "Sweet Caroline". I don't see Michigan, ND, UT, or Ohio State changing their traditions. But then again, they haven't had a near generation of futility.

I say anything that gets the crowd participating in the game is a good thing -- cheesy or not.

The KC Chiefs do "And it's another Chiefs ... FIRST DOWN." The Broncos do "IN -- COM -- PLETE" after every incomplete pass. Is it annoying when you're on the other side? Sure. But the crowd participates and that is something, unfortunately, our people need specific encouragement to do because goodness knows they don't actually know how or when to proactively cheer on their own.

I don't mind saying MUSTANGS after the first down announcement, and I'll be doing it with gusto. I hope you all will join in.

I guess the Bennett bashers could chant "we want a change" and jingle the coins in their pocket.

Or everyone brings their feather pillows and lightly carresses them in unison for every "touchDOWN."
