TCU, SMU keeping area recruits home
It's worth pointing out that SMU and TCU are doing a fabulous job keeping top area players at home.
It suggests that SMU made the right decision in keeping Phil Bennett around, and that Gary Patterson can get just as good of players at TCU as he can at Minnesota.
It also comes at crucial time as new North Texas coach Todd Dodge is sure to make a big impact with Dallas/Fort Worth area recruits.
TCU has commitments from eight players off of SportsDay's Area Top 100, including getting a key pledge from Woodrow Wilson's Greg McCoy. Loyal readers of this blog know how much Buzz respects McCoy and believes that at No. 37 in the area he is about 20 or 25 spots too low on the list (Buzz has no control over this because the top 34 players come directly in order off of Rivals.com's state list).
McCoy is an explosive player whether he is playing receiver or defensive back. Maybe his 5-10 height hurt him with recruiters. McCoy did have offers from Arizona, Iowa and Baylor, so once again TCU kept a player away from a BCS school.
SMU has seven players off the Area Top 100, including Hillcrest cornerback Derrius Bell, who is No. 63 on our list. And the Mustangs will have another when the list is updated in the next few weeks because Euless Trinity linebacker Youri Yenga deserves a spot in the Area Top 100.
To compare, TCU signed four players off the Area Top 100 last year, while SMU signed two.
So 2007 is promising a big improvement.

Both SMU and TCU have done a better job in DFW. But consider this graphic representations of the players who have committed to SMU and TCU in order:
18. Tejay Johnson TCU
30. Jonathan Jones TCU
37. Greg McCoy TCU
41. Josh LeRibeus SMU
45. Jeff Olson TCU
49. Chez Thomas TCU
54. Kris Gardner TCU
55. Derrius Bell SMU
56. Johnny Fobbs TCU
63. Kelly Griffin TCU
67. Logan Turner SMU
70. Julian Herron SMU
77. Terrance Wilkerson SMU
82. Bradley Haynes SMU
91. Kelly Turner SMU
96. Aldrick Robinson SMU
Now can anybody with a High IQ answer if they can spot any trends or reach conclusions about the two recruiting classes. I have been trying to explain for years that you ain't going to get very far recruiting from the Bottom of the Area Top 100. TCU doesn't and hasn't for years.

Agreed, but be fair and edit your post to include Darrius Bell as he is one of our higher rated recruits.

*Warning* This message is a Stallion defense and should not be read by Stallion haters. *Warning*
I think it was genuinely an oversight on his part. He has been practically gushing over Bell ever since we signed him. And it supports his point even further that our second highest commit in the area 100 is still behind ALL of TCU's commitments in the same 100. Question though. Doesn't TCU have an 8th player in the top 100 somewhere. Thought I recalled 8 for them but maybe its only 7.

Kelly Griffin DE from McArthur, #63 on the list.
Thanks! Found the link to the DMN/Rivals area 100 although it was last ranked in November.

As per this source we are still in the hunt for Justin Johnson #36, Jack Hlavaty #64, Mychal Sisson #68, Matt Howe #71, Anthony Bell #75, Chris Slater #76, Jacob Riley #86, Terrael Williams #88, Alvin Jordan #89, and Carlos Cuevas #93. Not sure if we are actually still recruiting all these guys or not or if we intend to offer being that our class seems to be quickly filling up. Also, some of these guys may have already committed somewhere and is just not updated yet.
