Memphis game

Post by Charleston Pony »

great effort by the guys tonite, especially the seniors...but playing basically with 5 guys I can't imagine they can hang in. Tied right now at 34 with 16 minutes to go, but we've had 5 guys play almost every minute and Memphis has nobody that has played more than 16 minutes total

now under 9 minutes to play and SMU has tied the game at 46. Announcers say we have a larger crowd than usual and very loud. Don't know how many are there, but what a difference a crowd can make for the energy levl of the guys

back to back 3 ptrs by Killen and Willingham off of screens set by Spencer, who is having to finish this game after Rack fouled out. Heck of an effort by the Ponies tonite. Defense is the great equalizer in college bball. Memphis may struggle to score 60 tonite

Killen fouled out and looks like Norton will now have to play because we've got nobody other than Dez to handle the ball

great effort tonite. These guys showed a lot of character. Probably would have been blown out if Ike had made that 3 to get it to OT. We just ran out of bodies but anyone who attended tonite certainly got their money's worth.

Great game overall...too bad we came up just a little short. Good crowd at Moody on BOTH sides. There were quite a few Memphis fans there also.

To my surprise, the students came out and were loud for most of the game, especially at the end.

Now let's just hope this is a sign of things to come...this was supposed to be a down year - we need to be fighting to at least make the NIT next.

Just got back from an Alumni game watching mixer here in Denver. Pretty decent turnout and a very good time! Bummer of course to play so well and not pull out the giant upset, but definitely looks like a great sign of things to come.

Great game we could have won with better free throw shooting down the stretch. A masterful, big time coaching job by Doh. I thought Dez played one of his best games at SMU and hopefully will be our leader next year. The atmosphere at Moody was electirc. If we could fill our house every game we would really have something. Spencer who played after Donatas fouled out showed good potential for the future.

Having a crazy thought. Purely hypothetical and probably very unrealistic, but let's say in the off chance that we make a crazy run in the C-USA tournament and lose another extremely close game to Memphis in the final (finishing the season 17-16), does anyone think we'd have any chance of making the NIT? I know we have a terrible in-conference record and had a very weak out-of-conference schedule, but would finishing strong, possibly raise some eyebrows? I know I've definitely seen some teams make the NIT in the past with just 17 or 18 wins, but they're obviously middle of the pack Big East, ACC, Big Ten type teams. I realize it's very much a completely ludicrous thought, but maybe with a marquee name coach such as Doh, would they possibly take a flyer on us?

Of course, I'd love to take it even one step further and say we're gonna run the whole thing and grab the automatic bid to the Dance. Hey, a man is entitled to a dream, right!?!?
