PB on the short yardage game to KGB:

Post by RGV Pony »

amongst other things discussed in the DMN:

"Bennett said the package will be more definite - the players will know exactly what to do and be very good at those plays."

Sounds nice...until one asks the question, 'as opposed to what?' So I guess the package was previously vague, and the players didn't really know what to do, and SMU wasn't very good at those plays.

Well, I guess the last part is pretty much dead on.

And it took 5 years to institute this concept? Better late than never... ?

yea, what the hell? Players don't know how to run up the gut behind their O-line? Thats what I call GREAT COACHING. How does it take 5 years for that to happen? Whatever, at least it seems like he's working on it.

I think this is typical Bennett protecting the ineptitudes that we have had in the past. We couldn't do short-yardage, on the one yard line plays because we didnt have the OL to do conventional short yardage plays. Now we are getting where we can do short yardage situations.

I hope he just means he has finally begun to institute a legitimate (practiced!) jumbo package.

For a long time we never got to the one yard line so why practice it?

Also, even when we did we fumbled it, even after a long run.

as has been pointed out here several times SMU employed a Jumbo package on several occassions in the Rice game and were stuffed. This is a lot more about personnel rather than the fan's favorite whipping boy-the head coach. Recruit big men, develop big men, tell big men to knock their man off the line. Celebrate great coaching decision by Head Coach.
