Tulsa Announces More Football Facility Upgrades by 2008
Another impressive financial fundraising success for Coach Graham. This seems to suggest its a done deal and will be completed by 2008. I kenew they were opening the Case Center-endzone facility for next year but didn't know they were going to refurbish rest of stadium this soon. Another in a long line of impressive facilities upgrades announced by CUSA schools. Good sign for the future of CUSA. I must say the commitment by Tulsa to improve their football and basketball facilities has been a pretty big pleasant surprise to me since they first joined the WAC. Guess they went so long without a decent conference affiliation that they have a better appreciation for their current affiliation.

I guess they will finally take the trailer down that they used for a press box for the last 40 years and cover up the rusted metal holding their seats up. They have possibly the worst fb facility in the country for a D1 school. I remember them walking through the visitors section just to get to the field from their locker room.

I wouldn't give Graham all the credit this was in the works before he showed up, like everything, winning can make alot of things happen. Unfortunately, the basic stadium is still in place most of this is window dressing. The interesting part is the Stadium used to hold 50,000+, the Tulsa paper this morning indicated the new capacity is 31,000. That's a pretty significant downsize.

Kind of like going from a 75,000 Cotton Bowl to a 65,000 Texas Stadium, to a 35,000 Ford.

Which, I think you would agree, was the right thing to do.

I think and I said so when it was built that it is a mistake to build a Stadium under 42,000 or so if you want to keep playing BCS type schools at home and/or recruit the top level of prospects. I expect Tulsa to lose much anticipated rivalries with OU, OSU, Arkansas et al because of this. Ford and the Tulsa facilities as lack quality seating between the endzones. That being said there are zoning restrictions involved with Ford, funding issues as well as the possibility of expanding a facility in the future. In short, a first class, small facility is better than no new facility at all. But and I know this may pissoff a lot on this board but I'm convinced that Ford Stadium DOES NOT impress the Top Recruits near as much as some of you seem to think. Yes its good enough to beat the Tulsas, the North Texas and UH and be competitive with aging facilities at TCU and Baylor and offer advantages to the fans of private schools that the Superdome can't. But I'm also convinced it lacks the WOW factor that the best recruits see at just about every BCS school. I think Ford makes the impression of a First Class stadium of an average and always will be average football program. Top recruits are looking for more WOW factor.
