SMU Listed in Top 30 Nationally Ranked Research Universities

Rice University is Texas' most productive research university, according to a study released Wednesday.

Rice came top of Chester, Pa.-based Academic Analytics' ranking of the Top 10 large research universities in the state measured by faculty scholarly productivity.

A research university was defined as an institution with 15 or more Ph.D. programs across multiple disciplines.

In second place was The University of Texas at Austin, followed by Texas A&M University; The University of Houston-University Park; UT San Antonio; UT Dallas; Texas Tech University; UT Arlington; The University of North Texas; and Baylor University.

Academic Analytics said out of the Top 10 only Rice and UT Austin ranked above the national average, while only Rice made it into the top 25 nationally.

Among Texas' small research universities, Southern Methodist University, Texas State University and UT El Paso were among the Top 30 nationally, though "even the best performing small research universities in Texas underperform the national average for all universities in overall faculty scholarly productivity," the study said.

However, several specialized small research universities ranked highly, including: Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (No. 1 in applied sciences); Sam Houston State University (No. 5 for business, education and social sciences); Dallas Theological Seminary (No. 5 in humanities); and Baylor College of Medicine (No. 6 in biomedical biological sciences).

It's a real b-tch to be a research university when "small" & "private" are in the description. As far as TAMU-Corpus, I can buy that...and SHSU for education...can buy that too...and Baylor as well...is obvious...but DTS vs. SMU? What a load of crap. Maybe SMU/Perkins should spend less time forging the way in liberal theology and more time in real religious scholarship. I was also about to poo-poo SHSU's B-school, but what I have heard recently is some pretty good stuff coming from there. SMU stills tops in B-School instruction, IMHO. Too much high level stuff in and around the school, and Dean Niemi has worked hard to raise SMU's standings.

Really???? I am seriously underwhelmed at what he has done. Rankings, fund raising, recruiting stud professors, recruiter ratings are all stagnant. The guy couldn't have come on board at a better time in SMU's history - successful capital campaign, ratings were moving upward for Cox, campus renovations, and................basically status quo. This is Turner's weakness- he won't move on mediocre deans - like Carol Brandt. She cost us millions by p$ssing off big donors like the Meadows Foundation and now he is letting Niemi underperform.............
