If Oklahoma and Georgia
can hire assistants, why can't SMU?
They have to start somewhere, and SMU qualifies as somewhere.

OU and Georgia are big enough and recognizable enough not to need a name coach to sell their respective programs. SMU has been in the dark for so long that not too many people recognize the brand. Once the brand is revived, we won't need a name coach either. Until that happens, we need a coach kids will want to play for in spite of having to come to SMU.
Additionally, they (OU and Georgia) are the number 1 choice for HS kids in their respective states. As it stands today, we are lucky to be in the top 10 in Texas.

Because this job requires more than just someone who can coach Xs and Os for a BCS school that's already got a leg up on talent. This is a special undertaking that few may want and even less may succeed in.
