SMU Closing in on Decision?

Sources in Dallas confirm Louisville Head Coach Steve Kragthorpe is very likely the choice to replace the deposed Phil Bennett at SMU.

It is unlikely SMU Athletic Director Steve Orsini has actually offered the position to Kragthorpe â€" or that the two have even spoken about the position â€" since Louisville has one more regular season game on its schedule. It's more likely the two sides are negotiating the parameters of a would-be deal through intermediaries, while also feeling out other options.

Steve Kragthorpe and SMU could be a marriage of convenience. For SMU, the Mustangs get a proven, championship coach (2005 C-USA Championship at Tulsa) with deep ties to the state of Texas (played at West Texas, assistant coach at Texas A&M) which should help significantly in recruiting. The potential hiring would also give Orsini the “splashâ€

thats tantamount to hiring Tulsa's coach. One year at Lousiville hardly counts. Could we really call that a splash hire? the 'marriage of convenience" description fits how I would see it.

the scenario discussed in this article concerning discussions through intermediaries rings true with respect to any coaches that might be under Contract with an NCAA Team or NFL Team. Very few teams would allow mid-season contractual discusions with a Coach without permission-and I believe most would not grant that permission until the end of the regular season IF THE SCHOOL WANTED THE COACH TO REMAIN. My belief is that those who say a Deal has been struck must be talking about an unemployed Coach, a Coach on the Hot-Seat on his way out or they are discussing merely preliminary negotiations with a sitting Division 1A Coach or NFL Coach. The reason for the intermediary is to avoid the tortious interference with contract claims decribed in other posts.

If Krag's couldn't win with what Petrino left him and his recent history of losing to PB you got to seriously wonder about him anyway.

That's one of the problems. Petrino didn't leave him with a whole lot.

Don't get me wrong, though. Kragthorpe is a just-above-ho-hum hire in my opinion. Not the WOW I was hoping for, but not that bad.

The footballrumormill guy left himself so many outs in that article, it is obvious he is just speculating to keep people coming back for more. Now on to the real subject...who will be our next coach? I vote Bowden...you'll just have to guess which one.
