Gary Gibbs > Kragthorpe?
Maybe Stallion's right. Take the cryptic description that had us all thinking Kragthorpe (school in Texas, coached in Texas, coached in the NFL, BCS Head Coach experience), subtract the part about going to college in Texas (went to OU), and Gibbs fits it better than Kragthorpe.
People forget his average record at OU was 7-4. The beef was he couldn't beat Texas or Nebraska. If he comes to SMU and beats everyone but Texas & Nebraska, I'll take him.
If our ideal guy was Butch Davis, I don't know that Gibbs isn't the second most appealing in the same mold.
This would also lend credence to Orsini "not talking to anyone until after Christmas," mentioned on another thread.
As far as name recognition to Joe Blow, not a wow. Recognition to folks who know something about football, right up there with Butch Davis, IMO.

Gibbs was the defensive coordinator for OU during the Switzer era who eventually replaced Switzer as head coach. As mentioned he was unable to beat Texas and Nebraska which gets you fired at OU. He wouldn't be a terrible choice but I doubt he's someone we are seriously looking at.
Back off Warchild seriously.

Defensive Coordinator at OU, LSU and Georgia plus offered the Coordinator Job at A&M. I think he was the LB Coach with the Dallas Cowboys under Parcells then moved back to Coordinator with the Saints when the Cowboys Coach became the Head Coach at New Orleans.

Plus he had to clean up Switzer's mess. Had some difficult sanctions to contend with

this guy was the Bob Stoops of the 1980s-meaning as the brightest defensive coordinator of his era. OU, Georgia, LSU and A&M plus the Cowboys don't hire chumps. The most dominating defensive unit in the country during his defensive coordinator tenure. 44-23 at OU with a roster depleted from recruiting restrictions and limitations after Switzer's NCAA probation. Thick resume but still only about 55.
"During his stretch as defensive coordinator, the Sooners captured the 1985 national title, and the defense led the nation three straight years (1985-87)."
He was only TWENTY SEVEN YEARS old when he became the Defensive Coordinator and dominated college football.

BTW Gary Gibbs was good enough and highly thought of enough that the Dallas Cowboys interviewed Gibbs last year for their head coaching job. Not good enough for SMU?

Good point. Let's look at quality of candidate, paying special attention to resume:
Gibbs > Kragthorpe (on defensive prowess & big time experience)
Gibbs > Bowden Terry & Tommy(longevity & NFL experience)
Gibbs > Johnson (NFL experience)
Gibbs > Gill (experience)
Gibbs > Fran (less of a pr*ck)
Gibbs > Nutt (less of a weirdo)
Gibbs > Greg Davis (I'd rather not have a UT asst)
Gibbs=Butch Davis
Gibbs < Barnett (Turner doesn't want Barnett)
Gibbs=Neuheisel
Gibbs>Applewhite (NFL & college HC experience)

I do like Gibbs's resume. Dont get me wrong. But there has to be a reason he has not gotten another shot in the last 15 years? Not only that, with the exception of this board, he has never been mentioned for a college HC job. Either we know more than the people who interview and hire college head coaches (we might) or something smells about this guy.
