Word was he was supposed to interview on his way back from the Heisman ceremony. Problem is, he didn't go to the Heisman ceremony and was in Hawaii the whole weekend (per local newspaper reports). Hawaii TV reported that he may have interviewed at UCLA and had been in LA earlier that week.

(If you want the links, search for the previous JJ threads)

Bottom line is, we don't know. Steve-O could have interviewed him at some point, but the meeting that was actually reported about didn't happen.

Apparently, the answer to that question is a closely guarded secret.

Does anyone else find it a little strange that Hawaii cannot seem to extend this guy’s contract, which expires in June 2008? Don’t most schools keep four years on a coach’s contact to provide new recruits with some confidence that the head coach will hang around for a little while?

Recently, a group of businessmen from Hawaii compiled $100,000+ as a bonus for Jones, which he promptly gave away to his assistants. Jones makes $800,000. per year.

Then Jones called his reported interest in the UCLA job, “an absolute lie."

I find this whole situation a little, shall we say, different.

Why would Hawaii leave itself so vulnerable?

Does JJ really want to leave?

June Jones & other notes

Post by locostang »

I think June is a leading candidate for the job since he is butting heads with the Hawaii administration about where all the BCS Bowl money will be applied. Apparently the Hawaii facilities are crap and need a big upgrade. Also, he will make more than double per year at SMU.

I would love to watch his offense through the ball 70 times a game.

Tonight I spoke with someone in the SMU Athletic Administration who really would like to get June Jones. This person also said we pretty much had PJ in the bag until GTech put the full court press on him. He also said that we talked with Cutcliff. I would have loved to have gotten him. Grea hire for Duke. I believe he will have some success there.

Last thing this person said was that most all of the big name candidates that are being thrown around are not even being considered.

Who is this person Loco? Have you been reading the message board and just want to seem important. June Jones has health problems associated with the near fatal car wreck he had some years back. He plans to retire in Hawaii and has no plans on leaving or asking for a raise. He will move into the athletic admin when he is finished coaching and live happily ever after. Say what you want about Hawaii, but most of us would retire there in a heartbeat.

I am a former player and big supporter of SMU. Who are you bigdaddy?

Is that why you post, to make yourself feel important? I post because my wife can only take so much of my ranting on the subjects covered here. I am a loyal SMU fan, and this is a pretty exciting moment for our program. It is fun talking with others who care about SMU Football as much as I do.

I think you are probably right about June Jones. Hawaii is probably his last gig. He needs a huge salary bump after this BCS Bowl berth though. I would take him if he wanted the job. Someone decently high up in the Athletic Administration mentioned that they really would like to get him too.

Not all coaches coach for the money. Remember this saying "all money is not good money". June made plenty money while in the NFL. Money is not his deal at this point. He is at home and home is where he will stay. Hawaii will blow up after this BCS bid. Can you imagine the number of kids wanting to go to Hawaii and live and play football for 2-4 years?
