Freshman jersey numbers

Post by WildHorse »

According to the 2003 Media Guide, here are the jersey numbers assigned to this year's invoming freshmen:

1 - CB Fred Turner
5 - QB Ricky Joe Meeks
7 - QB Chris Phillips
8 - CB Ervin McGee
9 - K Ryan Wolcott
17 - WR Blake Warren
18 - WR Jay'Mond Cleveland
23 - CB Cedric Dorsey
24 - CB C.D. Moss
29 - S Joe Sturdivant
33 - RB Richuel Massey
44 - LB Zach Hall
50 - OL Caleb Peveto
52 - LB Avery Cleveland
55 - DE Lucky DeLay
56 - DT Brandon Bonds
65 - OL Bryan Turner
76 - OL Kenard Burley
79 - OL Justin Boren
85 - WR Reynaldo Pellerin
88 - LB Cory Muse
92 - DE Charlie Berry
96 - DT Desmond Jones

A couple of things jump out there:

- I thought Lucky DeLay was supposed to wear #1?

- It's appropriate that Brandon Bonds is wearing #56, since that's the number his brother Byron wore.

- Fred Turner is listed at cornerback, not running back.

- Cory Muse is listed at linebacker, not tight end (or wide receiver, which some have speculated might end up being his position in college.)

I'm pretty comfortable with that list, except I would have liked to see Avery Cleveland with a really low number - fast LBs look impressive, somehow, in a single-digit number. And maybe Desmond Jones should have joined Allan Adami in the teens.

Cory Muse in #88 should be cool, especially if he ends up back at linebacker. You don't see many LBs in the 80s.

I would have liked to see Lucky DeLay wearing #1. But Fred Turner should do well in it.

Good to see Fred Turner in #1 and Ervin McGee in #8. Guys that fast look even faster in single-digit jerseys.

Somehow, coming out of high school, Avery Cleveland just didn't sound like a guy who'd wear a jersey in the 50s. He should be in a jersey numbered 30 or below - and it has to be an even number, unless it's #11 or a single digit. Don't ask me why - just a gut feeling.

Think anyone will mistake Blake Warren for Billy Ford?
Neither do I.

And if they're giving #7 to Chris Phillips, is that a hint that Daniel Francis won't be back a year from now?

he has two best friends that play for Houston- I wouldn't be surprised if he ended up there.
