Jones resigns as UH coach
By Stephen Tsai
Advertiser Staff Writer
June Jones has resigned as University of Hawaii head football
coach, according to his close friend, Al Souza.
Jones resigned this morning, citing among other things a lack of
loyalty and commitent from athletic department leaders.
"This breaks his heart," Souza said of Jones' decision to leave.
Jones sent letters to friends announcing that he is resigning after
nine seasons. He thanked his friends for their support in the letter,
in which he listed several reasons why he would no longer coach
at the school.
Jones is en route to Dallas, where he will meet with other SMU
officials about the Mustangs vacant head coaching job.
Jones is scheduled to meet with the SMU president, athletic director,
search committee and boosters tomorrow. During that time, he is
expected to receive a contract offer that would pay him up to
$2 million a year.
Jones currently earns $800,016 from Hawaii on a contract that
expires June 30.
Doesn't say anything about taking our job. I'll believe it when I see him at the press conference standing next to Orsini smiling for pictures, but not until then.
AMEN - TIME TEN. Let's not jump to conclusions. He's got to resign first before he can take the SMU job ***OR*** ANY OTHER JOB.
I am pretty sure he's coming here now. However, you just never know until things are signed, sealed and delivered.

The way I see it, no one quits a job before having another one lined up. At this point we are the only ones who have made an offer.

Usually, ESPN's NFL reporters are pretty on TOP of these searches. The only ones known are Miami, Baltimore and Atlanta. I haven't seen anything that suggests Junes is in anyone's crosshairs, but the media doesn't know everything.
However, getting back to the academics issue. Since Jones has resigned, that would signal that there was common ground found on this part of the negotiations.
Perhaps Steinberg meeting before Jones got there was important to get this done and he kept in contact with Jones to let him know how it was going. So the big parts of the negotiations were done without Jones being there. That's what attorneys are for.
I've done many a deal with my people with the middle man on behalf of somebody else. This would suggest this is no different.

Where's Big Daddy?
Sign on the dotted line first. I will be glad to backtrack when it happens.
Spoken like a gentleman.
Resignations can be rescinded, but I like the looks of things.
