Starting a new tradition

You know how the players at Clemson always rub a big rock before they go out on the field, and the players at notre dame reach up and hit that old sign in the hallway from the lockerroom? Maybe SMU can develop such a tradition of pride.

How about having all SMU players come out and touch the statue of the great Doak Walker for good luck before games?

A tradition of winning is most important, I agree. I think rubbing the statue would be a cool idea. The fact is, traditions such as that are more important to the players, and it needs to be something that the players decide on!

Regarding MustangMan's suggestion about rubbing the statue of Saint Doak: Is there a security measure to prevent vandalism from other schools' fans? Is it going to be raised up out of arm's reach, or behind a fence of some kind?

Good point. However , I think the statue is going to be on a pedistal out of reach from vandals and players alike? I'm not sure. Mustang Matt could probably get the skinny on that.

As a member of the group (Phi Delta Theta, Texas Delta Chapter) that raised money (a horde of it) for the statue this semester, I have the "skinny."

The inner core of the statue of Brother Doak Walker will, itself, be made of some sort of metal such as iron or just plain good 'ol American steel. The outer shell will be !00% pure bronze. The statue, aka, the likeness of Doak Walker, will be 9....yes, NINE feet tall.

This 9 foot tall masterpiece will stand upon a five foot tall concrete/cement (whichever) pedastel.

Summing up to 14 feet tall, this statue will be just as I said, a masterpiece. Colleges all around will envy the SMU Paul Bunyanesque monument.

As the statue will be placed in the center of the plaza that will be on the northeast side of the stadium, where 75% of all attendants will enter the stadium, most everyone that goes to the game will see the statue in all its glory.

If you care to help out, you can make a donation to the fund. We still haven't finished raising money for the plaza.

If you are a Texas Delta alum and wish to have your name engraved on a plate that will reside on the five foot pedastel, you can write a $250 check.

Well said. I'm glad to know that Texas Delta has decided to take the initiative in honoring one of the greatest Phi's of all time. I thought y'all were set on donations. I'll be calling Searcy this week. The statue sounds great and I'm sure we're all looking forward to see it standing in all its glory for many years to come.

There's a tradition that was started (I believe) by Baltimore Orioles fans, where during the national anthem, in the line that goes "Oh say does that star-spangled banner yet wave?...." they yell out the "O" -- as in Orioles. Now Dallas Stars fans do the same thing.

How about, at the end of the national anthem, every fan in attendance alters the end of the song: " .... and the home of the .... MUSTANGS!!!"

Just a thought -- not trying to make light of the national anthem at all. What do you guys think?

Great Idea - How do we get the word out. Most likely the AD dept. would not help do to respect for the National Anthem but WE COULD.
