A high school football prospect from the mainland is suing the University of Hawaii for allegedly withdrawing a scholarship offer to him when former head coach June Jones left for Southern Methodist University. Daniel Smith, 17, a former student at Providence High School in Charlotte, N.C., filed suit against UH and former Warrior defensive line coach Jeff Reinebold yesterday in state court. Smith has since transferred to a high school in Idaho.
The lawsuit accuses UH of reneging on an athletic scholarship offer Reinebold allegedly promised to him before he left for SMU with Jones.
"This incident happened before I came on board last year," coach Greg McMackin said in a statement. "Jeff Reinbold is no longer on staff here."
Got it. Sounds like something is up with the kid too if he's transferring high schools and suing to get in to a college. I'm just a little wary of all the power the coaches have in that they can rescind offers so late. I know people who didn't even apply to college until about the time they got their scholarship offers. They would have been up a creek if the school pulled the offer, just in that they would have missed application deadlines for other schools.

Having a back-up plan in place in Personal Responsibility 101. College football is not a right.
Come on. If you accept a job offer do you generally keep interviewing in case the rescind the offer? College football is a job and at SMU they pay you $45K in benefits to do it. If you were 18 and a coach told you you were going to play for him, you wouldn't be applying to other schools.

If I had a job offer in the fall, but could not officially sign to accept it until February 6th, I'd keep my eye out for other options!
Good! Nothing better than a good ole fraudulent inducement lawsuit. Think it would be funny as hell if some university got tagged by a pissed off jury. I'm telling you to the average person this smells bad-and a jury might really hit some school. Let me see Coach No. 1 represented the university when he made that offer didn't he Mr. University President? And Not-So-Hot-Shot Recruit you relied on those promises and stopped looking at other schools didn't you. I'm telling you the NCAA needs to come in and clean this mess up. Jones and Rinehold have little to worry about because at all times they were operating as representatives of a disclosed principal- the university
I am a lot more interested in Arkansas asking the NCAA for a waiver of the 1 year sit out on Mallet just because a new coach came in and had a system that was not the best for Mallet. If Arkansas wins that one, there will never be a one year sit out in college sports again.

I agree. Arkansas is desperate for a QB and it doesn't hurt a thing to ask the NCAA to make yet another exception for poor old Arkansas. If I were another school, I would be up in arms over this request. One of the few deterrents to kids jumping from school to school is the year sitting out and possible lost playing time. If the Beloved Razorbacks get this exception, then kids will start jumping school and free age4ncy will have come to the NCAA. I could see payrolls really becoming an issue as schools identify kids that are playing elsewhere but could fill a gap. They then go make an offer. The new free agent rules allow schools to buy the best players after they have been developed by another school.
