I agree with the writer about Terrell and Phillips. Gene is a good friend of mine and we went to the state basketball tournament together for many years. Not a nicer guy around. He was honored a few years back at the state tournament.

Is Gene Phillips the local real estate guy?

Gene Phillips would have averaged over 35 or 40 points a game if there had been a 3 point shot in his day. He never missed from the corner. What a great player he was and wonderful to watch.

I believe Gene is AD at Alamo Heights now.

I never saw John Kontract play when he was in college. But I did see him play in the NBA. Anyway, given Kontract's history with Dave Bliss etc...SMU probably should have retired Phillips and Terrell's numbers along with Kontract to avoid this type of criticism and of course honor deserving Mustangs...

"Heck, he should have his number retired just for those hundreds of men's and women's games he has sat through the last 20 years."

Haha, now THAT is the truth! On second thought, I think that any season ticket holder that has actually attended most of the games for the past 20 years should be given an honorary jersey to hang from the rafters.

Has anyone checked pulses. A lot of those in attendance at our men's games may actually have hanged themselves from the rafters.

That might be the only article that Cowlishaw has written that makes any sense.

Durant shouldn't have a jersey retired for 1 year at school. Ira should have been honored long ago.

You don't think Durant deserves to have his jersey retired? He is the only UT player to ever win college player of the year, and the first freshman to ever win the award. What he did for recruiting at UT will be felt for years. They owe that young man a lot.

I am sure he has been paid sufficiently. Some things don't change. UT is just smarter than others at how they go about it.

The Gene you are thinking of is a SEC favorite whipping boy.

As Cowlishaw said it is all about wins at the college level. If Durant had taken the team to the final four or won the national championship and won the college player of the year award then maybe. However, he did not even advance the team to the level UT fans have grown accustomed to under Barnes. TJ Ford arguably had a much bigger impact for the school than Durant. I do agree to a certain extent with Cowlishaw on the names of the people SMU should consider, but let's not kid ourselves SMU has not had the necessary success to retire multiple jerseys. It is always better to hold back than to retire jerseys unnecessarily. Look at the Boston Red Sox vs the Houston Astros. The Astros have retired more jerseys than the Red Sox despite their shorter history and their lesser winning tradition. I have much more respect for the retired numbers at Fenway than I do for the numbers in Houston. The only jerseys that should be retired in Houston are Robinson, Biggio and Bagwell. Cruz, Dierker, Cannon, Ryan, Umbricht, etc. were great players for the Astros, but did not transform the franchise.
