New $2 million endowed chair in engineering school
http://www.csemag.com/article/CA6540541.html
Looks from the article this chair will be involved in the "gender parity initiative" to promote SMU's discrimination on the basis of sex.

Leo was a god among men. It is so difficult to get something done now a days, whereas when he was here it was a one stop shop. And he could make sure you graduated. No matter how late you turned stuff in, or how fast you needed it.
Sir, shooting-star, sir.

Such BS. Obviously the Turner & the board are 100% behind all this discrimination but whatever. As for me, I'll never give them another dime. So much for excellence?

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

Same with me. And even as busy as he was, he was always happy to help even though he wasn't really my advisor. And he ADVISED, instead of just signed off on your papers and kicked you out like the other "advisors".MustangStealth wrote:I used him every year, even after they switched us all to professors as advisors. None of them had a clue, but Leo knew the system inside and out.

I suppose they could just kick out most of the males in the program and decalare success.couch 'em wrote:I'm going to try to figure out exactly how they are trying to reach the 50% goal.NavyCrimson wrote:Such BS. Coming from a minister your comments appear a little strange. Are you really one??? I'm wondering how you could believe in the Bible & still believe in something as terrible as discrimination. Interesting theology you represent.

Sorry. I shouldn't have referred to you all as idiots. My apologies. That was out of line. I have a young woman in my church who is brilliant in math and science and has been turned down by several good schools while guys are getting accepted. She wants to move into engineering like her dad, but doors are closed to her at many of the schools she is applying to. I have no problem at all with a college setting up opportunities for girls to get the same kind of educational opportunities that boys have gotten for years. To me that is an issue of fairness, not discrimination. At one of the schools, a Big 10 school, only about 10% of the students in engineering are girls. That is a problem especially when smart high school girls are being excluded. I personally think scripture encourages us to be agents of change and fairness.

Talk about looking a gift horse in the mouth.
I don't give a good god-damn (sorry, Reverend) why somebody is giving money to the engineering school. The fact that TI is giving is something to be pleased about, not something to parse to death. C'mon.
People used to [deleted] and moan about former Gov. Clements giving money to the History department. He also funded SMU-in-Taos' entire operating budget for the first few years (if not now) as well as inspired the Hughes-Triggs to put up cash for the HT Student Center.
So what if somebody supports gender-parity. It's not like it's a bad thing, or even something that is tough to stomach. They want a woman in the role. Big deal. She gets paid the interest on a $2 million restricted gift. That probably isn't even a $100,000 right now. Department Chairs should make strong coin, if for no other reason than to attract good professors to take on the role.
