The Mood

The mood around here since the QB announcement is the biggest surprise to me. The whiners are out in force. This is stupid as it's the start of a new era -- we ought to be enjoying the ride. Change always brings stress.

Most will be somewhat crabby until next week when the countdown is really on. Then you will see some excitement and nervousness, but at least a better mood. Sunshine will be breaking those clouds.

Look, if we look at this objectively, and assume JJ did the same (who had the best passing record over 4,000 throws, who had the best ability to make reads) we ought to be extatic in that we hav two freshman quarterbacks that have beaten out the previous starter. If we ever have a great recruitng year, this could happen at several positions in a single season. Isn't this exactly what we have been hoping for?

I've been hoping for a winning season and a bowl game.

We all have, but sometimes you need to trade up, that means you "don't always go home with the girl you brought to the dance"

JSquared, and JWill have had some differences in the past.

J Squared (the 2 mil/yr man) is going to make JWill jump thru
as many hoops as possible before JWill earns the #1 position.

I just hope JWill understands that.

I also hope JSquared isn't like Cavan. Switching QB's during a game
based on the last drive.

I also hope SMU has based JSquared's contract on some
accomplishments before he is due the full 5 year 10 mil deal.

we've been "trading up" according to Ponyboy, the Captain & Tenniel and the rest of the Pom Pom boys with each successive QB catastrophe since Mike Romo. Flanigan<Sanders<McClown< Rock (& Roll)<Richard Bartel< Tate Wallis < Ernest & Young<Chris Phillips<Tip Eckert<Romo II<Willis<Christian Slater(now fighting for 3rd or 4th string on a D1AA team)< Opie Turner<BLT. Justin Willis is an established talent whose career we are throwing down the drain because we want to see how two untested, lightly recruited true freshman will do. Why because they looked good in a two week dress rehearsal during Fall Flag Football drills. Just rearranging chairs on the Titanic and until we start getting some quality QBs in here I don't see this changing. At least make these kids earn the job otherwise it is really kinda silly to just flush the one proven talent down the drain. More faith and confidence should have been shown in a very productive QB who has smashed SMU passing records in only his Freshman and Sophmore seasons. If its so damn difficult to learn then more than two weeks of paddy-cake scrimmages should have been tried before relegating the Veteran to the 3rd String. That is a slap in the face of any intelligent analysis of the SMU QB situation.

I wonder if the keeper of the star considered the idea that Justin Willis also contributed to his own demise here.

Remember, bud, any relationship is a two-way street. But he wouldn't know anything about that because his idea of a relationship is asking the other person if he/she will take cash or credit.

Stallion have you been at practices and observed these guys? Willis is a proven talent. Talented enough to not score from the 1 yard line with a bowl game on the line. Talented enough to get sacked on three straight plays against ECU with the game on the line (a game which had we won would have clinched that same bowl bid). Talented enough to throw three picks against UH. Talented enough to get bad grades and miss spring workouts to learn a new offense. Had he managed to keep his grades passing, he would have made it to spring workouts. He would have been #1 going into the 2 a days. He wouldn't have had to dress up for the beauty pagent. Unfortunately that didn't happen, and in 2 a days, guess what, the others did better according to JJ who seems to know a thing or two about QB's. So, he dropped like a rock. Yes, JW is a moderately talented Div. 1 QB and perhaps later in the year once he learns the offense, he'll get tapped and contribute. All I can say is that JJ's honeymoon ended yesterday. If these greenhorns throw a few picks against Rice, the sharks will be feeding. I will take a wait and see approach and see what happens against Rice. We all know this team needs to score 35 points per game to win this year.

Yea that's the guy I'm talking about-the guy who set all kinds of SMU passing records as a Freshman and Sophmore-maybe if our Coaches showed more confidence in the above QBs for more than a semester or so we might get an experienced QB who might be able to use that 4 year experience to lead us to the Toilet Bowl. Go back and check the QB Catastrophe's listed above. 10/11 of those kids played in their Freshman or first year from JUCO. Most were run off after about 3 semesters. That's just ridiculous. In just about every case SMU would have been better off committing to the more experienced QB and sticking with him to develop his talent instead of leading a Cheerleader Parade for the next inexperienced Boy-Wonder.

Stallion: What are "paddy-cake scrimmages". Either you mean patty-cake or I am one offended Irishman :)

I am EXCITED lets take our Frosh and throw him to the wolves he will survive ! Willis didn't prove himself when it counted countless times with the old coaching staff and the new so why not start from scratch with a taller strong armed QB?
