Can we please let June Jones coach this team?

Post by George S. Patton »

There has been so much in-fighting on this board about every step he's taken, especially since August workouts started, it's borderline stupid.

And yes, I've contributed my share to the madness. But for God's sake people, we just hired a guy who was coaching in the freakin' Sugar Bowl in January.

Is there a chance some of us can let the Jones era play out before we judge the damn thing?

This is ridiculous. It's like we are so close to this program, we don't appreciate what we have.

Meanwhile, I personally hold the keeper of the star responsible for about 75 percent of this mayheim.

He kept saying that when Jones' name surfaced for this job, that it was a waste of time and that SMU should really get on with the coaching search.

How'd that work out?

Now, that Jones is here, the keeper has decided that Jones doesn't know what he's doing with the quarterback situation.

So what is he saying here?

Is he saying that Jones should have never taken the job so Justin Willis' job would have been safe with a different coach?

Is he saying that Jones let Willis' body of work on and off the field influence his decision to not go with him as the starter?

Is he saying that he knows more about Jones' Run N Shoot offense and what kind of quarterback fits the system better than Jones does?

Has he already decided that the Jones era is a failure?

To me, it just seems that he goes out of his way to find something to complain/sob/whine about because it always seems to differ from his EVER-CHANGING STANDARDS.

We started to see that when he didn't feel like the recruiting didn't measure up to his standards. But don't worry about the fact that our kids are rating higher this year than last year -- and we matched the number of three-star recruits this year as last year. Oh, and Jones helped bring in
all 4 3-star kids last year when the previous staff did not

I'd love to see the Jones and Keeper egos in the same room. Nobody would fit.

Enjoy the season, I guess.

P.S.
I really like how he and others are dogpiling the Timmy Chang era at Hawaii. For all of his interceptions oh and 117 touchdowns (But don't worry about that), Chang SHOCKINGLY led Hawaii to bowl victories over Houston and UAB in 2003 and 2004. Did SMU go bowling in either one of those years?

Your post was too long to actually read all of it but...this is a fan message board! people are going to debate, argue, offer their opinions... That's what makes sports fun. But I do agree with you - Jones knows what he's doing

I posted on another thread that whatever Jones thinks is best for the team is good enough for me and that there are very few coaches I'd say that about, which is why he's getting 2 million bones or clams or whatever you want to call them per year.
Larry Brown? We have Larry Brown? Cool!

My thoughts exactly. Some are saying they want their money back for the season tickets and won't be coming to games now. Some even said they would be booing BM if he made a mistake. That is just sad.
When will I start feeling stimulated??

Amen to that George S. Patton. (Note: General George S. Patton participated in the 1912 olympics.)

I admit I am biased. I believe in a balanced system not a trick system.
I also belong to an era that was able to watch SMU play equal with anybody in any conference. I have watched SMU when they had bad teams able to go against Missouri, Ohio State, Notre Dame Etc and play equal. As my generation age and die out I am afraid that the younger SMU fans will never see this because they can only ever remember the losing and accept that as the status quo. I would once again like to know that SMU could go in the Rose, Sugar, Fiesta Bowl and know they have a chance of winning. Again I do not believe you can do this with the throw and hope.

Sorry oz, we are not in Kansas anymore. The BCS and SMU's mismanagement of the athletic program have put us so far behind that we can not get the quality recruits at this time to have the type of team you would like. Maybe in the future if we can learn to win again.

That's what I thought. What are we supposed to do on here? Share recipes, discuss what color of shoes matches our eyes best, and coordinate our knitting circles?

If we did what this thread is telling us to, what would be the purpose of ponyfans.com. If we agreed with everyone else on this board and didn't play armchair coach, most of us would leave.

This "Bo knows the run and shoot" thinks is starting to grow on me, though.
