Why SMU will win!!!!!!!!!

Although SMU will be featuring a freshman QB for the June Jones Run n Shoot, they actually can win this game.

Rice offense vs SMU defense - Rice barely beat SMU last year with a FG in the closing minutes. THis is with a patchwork defense SMU had on the field. Although Rice is returning the bulk of their offensive starters, SMU have a much better defense than Rice saw the past two years when each year the offense hasn't dominated. Dilliard has been tough to cover but the QB has had all day to get him the ball. Not this year the pressure should be more intense than in past years. Adv - SMU

SMU offense vs Rice defense - THe run-n- shoot makes it's debut with a freshman QB, but it's a QB whom JJ feels has the talent, poise, and confidence to make the jump to D1 football. As horrendous as SMU defense was last year, Rice's defense was worse (118th). There will be some missteps on the offense side but Rice does have some holes to fill on the defensive line which should help give BLM some time to find his quick n fast recievers. If it wasn't for FR QB first game would give SMU the advantage. ADV - Rice

Special Teams - SMU finally has a special team coach. This alone should help from last years team, but add to it Gansz's attention to detail to every aspect of the special teams and this should equate to better returns and better tackling on kickoffs and punt returns. Special teams may be the difference in this game. adv - SMU

Kicking - Morstead.... enough said. adv - SMU

Coaching - SMU just has a better coaching staff. Adv - SMU

JJ and Staff have put together a group of proven Coaches here that have won awards in the NFL etc. These Coaches have been working on the Rice game for several months now. That fact gives me alot of confidence in a positive outcome in the Rice game in an otherwise young and inexperienced football team. The Players are really impressed with this group of Coaches. I expect SMU will play alot better than many think.

Yes, the coaching should help, however, as this is a CUSA game and opening game, and national TV game, I suspect the Owls have been pointing to this one as well. :shock:
