Vandy's Mountain to Climb

Post by Stallion »

I heard an amazing stat on ESPN the other day-I haven't verified it. The announcer said Vandy is 0-17 in games in which it had to win to become bowl eligible. Vandy plays Kentucky tonite

But I guess it is far better to have played for bowl eligibility 17 times and lost than it is not play for bowl eligibility.

Either the stat is wrong or the game against Kentucky does not count as they have other games left on the schedule. They have been to 3 bowl games so they had to win at least 3 times to "get bowl eligible", or it means do or die in which Kentucky wouldnt count.

This from a month ago. Of course Vandy has been to a bowl but not since 1982:

Thursday, October 16, 2008
Vanderbilt will become eligible for a bowl invitation if it beats Georgia on Saturday. The Commodores could have taken care of that last week, but instead lost to Mississippi State 17-14, continuing a long trend of futility in such games.

Vanderbilt hasn't participated in college football's postseason since losing to Air Force 36-28 in Birmingham's Hall of Fame Classic on Dec. 31, 1982. That left Vanderbilt with an 8-4 record — the most recent winning season for the Commodores.

Since that bowl, Vanderbilt has had 14 opportunities to reach the bowl-eligibility standard of six victories in a season. All 14 times they have lost.

Well yes since 1982, bit that wasn't stipulated in your stat, though there is still a possibility that they never won a game at the end of the season to become bowl eligible.

Oh, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, 14% of people know that.

2 WR in the top ten in the country
Against Houston we threw for more yards than any of their opponents including #11 OK State and Dez Bryant
As a team we had the highest QB rating of any Memphis opponent
We held Navy to 0 pass yards
We held #2 Texas Tech to their fewest Rushing TD of the year.
We are +6 in Fumble Margin

Take that out of context of our record and actual performance and you might think they aren't bad

We have lost 15 games in a row in CUSA and are 0-18 or 0-19 against D1 teams.

Im not arguing we arent bad, just showing that statistics are twistable. As Mark Twain said there are 3 types of lies; lies, damn lies, and statistics.

Vanderbilt has a 50-50 chance to get to 8 wins. Finish the season at home against Tennessee who has mailed it in and at Wake Forest. It would be really cool to see them playing in a bowl in December.

Vanderbilt should be a role model for us. BTW they were 0-19 in going for their sixth win until last Saturday @ Kentucky. Congratulations to them.
