Can someone help me and explain the state of SMU Basketball?

Post by lwjr »

living in Midland it is very difficult to follow the Basketball team or that matter any basketball. Do we have any talent on this team? Is our coaching really this poor? Does SMU Basketball have a future in its current state? I am just trying to get a handle on things. Cause from out here it does not look very good. Thanks in advance for your feedback.

It's fairly simple. You have a team that has been mentally broken by the coach. They come out wired up tight and can't hit the broad side of a barn. They play in fear of making a mistake and getting jerked..... Couple that with the fact that the players won't commit to playing the zone defense as it must be played results in easy looks at the basket when the ball rotates to the weak side. It appears Williams is the only one that is mentally tough enough to play his game. McCoy looks like he has totally lost his confidence as he doesn't look like the same player who destroyed A&M Corpus.......

McCoy & Faye both had great games against A&M CC.
I'm more concerned with Faye. He was MIA again tonight.
Actually, you can just go down the roster & say the same thing about everyone with the exception of Williams. What a mess.

Faye has an adequate outside shot, but should not be your outside threat. He needs to be posted and jump out for 12-15 footers. I think other teams are sagging on us to make us jack it up from outside and we just can't shoot from the outside unguarded. Guys get great looks and throw up bricks. You don't win games bricking them from 18-21 feet. If I were Doherty, I would tell the guys at practice to find a spot just inside the arc that is their spot, that they just can't miss from that spot. And during games get to that spot and drill a few. Right now they need to rebuild their confidence from the perimeter, or we'll love every game from here on out.

You have a team that has no leadership, no one willing to become a leader even though Doherty claims he wants somebody to step up. You also have a team that has no chemistry.

Your post play stinks because supposedly your best post player in Papa Dia has decided to take the year off. Mohammed Faye should now be recognized ast Mohammed Fade. He wont drive it to the basket.

And when you don't guard people, you pretty much get what you deserve.

When you have one or two guys regressing, you can put it on the players...but when most of the team is regressing, you have to look at the coach. The only player who has remained consistent this year is Williams, a tough NYC kid. 45 pts to UCF??? Bottom line - Doherty has lost this team....and the ship is sinking fast.

I just don't think I have ever seen a group quit like this before....it's not like we are without talent. We've lost to at least 4 teams that we had more talent than....and while I think UCF is better than us, they are definitely not 25 pts better. IMO, the Rice loss was the most disturbing of the year - in that game we showed nothing against a very bad team...in three C-USA games last week Rice lost by an average of 30 pts per game.

I didn't see the game against UCF so I cannot attest to the effort and heart showed by the team in this one. However, there is absolutely no way that the team quit prior to yesterday. The Marshall game SMU showed nothing but fight and the team played hard in the ECU game as well. If the team quit on Doh, it didn't happen until yesterday's game.

Also, anyone catch Mo Faye's interview that they played during half-time of the radio broadcast? Did not at all sound like someone who had quit on his coach or teammates to me.
