UGA to pay nearly $1 million to play UNT

Athens ├â┬ó├óΓÇÜ┬¼├óΓé¼┬¥ Georgia will pay North Texas $975,000 to open the 2013 football season in Sanford Stadium ├â┬ó├óΓÇÜ┬¼├óΓé¼┬¥ the most UGA has ever guaranteed a visiting team and the latest example of the rising cost of scheduling anticipated easy victories.

According to the contract between UGA and North Texas, obtained by the Journal-Constitution under open-records laws, the teams are to play on Aug. 31, 2013.

Georgia last played New Mexico State in Athens in 2002, winning 41-10. The Bulldogs will pay $925,000 to meet the Aggies again in Athens in 2011.

PAY FOR PLAY

Georgia has signed contracts for six home football games over the next five seasons against teams that will not require the Bulldogs to make return engagements on the road. What UGA will pay for those games:

├â┬ó├óΓÇÜ┬¼├é┬ó Lousiana-Lafayette: $875,000 on Sept. 4, 2010
├â┬ó├óΓÇÜ┬¼├é┬ó Coastal Carolina*: $475,000 on Sept. 17, 2011
├â┬ó├óΓÇÜ┬¼├é┬ó New Mexico State: $925,000 on Nov. 5, 2011
├â┬ó├óΓÇÜ┬¼├é┬ó North Texas: $975,000 on Aug. 31, 2013
├â┬ó├óΓÇÜ┬¼├é┬ó Appalachian State*: $325,000 on Sept. 7, 2013
* ├â┬ó├óΓÇÜ┬¼├óΓé¼┬¥ Division I-AA programs

The price surpasses the $925,000 Georgia will pay New Mexico State for a Nov. 5, 2011, game in Sanford Stadium. Louisiana-Lafayette will get $875,000 for coming to Athens for a Sept. 4, 2010, game.

Such prices reflect the rapid rise in the paydays commanded by lower-tier Division I-A programs that are willing to play in a BCS-level opponent├â┬ó├óΓÇÜ┬¼├óΓÇ₧┬ós stadium without demanding a return visit.

For Georgia, the economics make sense because an additional home date nets several million dollars. And for schools like North Texas, the paydays help fund their athletics programs.
