How huge is this season?

Post by davidpaul123 »

I think the upcoming season is even more important than I ever thought it would be. I figured it would take 3 years to turn this program around and while that may be just what it takes, this season seems crucial to me.

The reason I think this season is so important is because when you look at recruiting for 2010, we are basically done. We for the most part have the kids we are going to get, with the exception of a few of the higher rated guys we are holding out for.

What this means is that the coaching staff is now focused on the 2011 players. Getting an early jump on these recruits will be huge for the coaching staff and recruiting in general, but what will ultimately be important in landing the top recruits is the buzz that we create this season.

Creating a buzz is going to take two things. The first of which is Wins. I don’t know how many we need to get to, but we need to show improvement in the W-L column. Can we win 6 games this year? (I think we need to at least get to 4)

The other thing that is huge in creating buzz is an upset. Can we upset ECU at home? Can we stun TCU at Amon Carter? Can we follow up on the solid performances we had last year against Houston and Rice?

Anybody else think this season is crucial, or is this just a stepping stone to what we can REALLY do next year?

what we can't do is go 1-11 again. that would be disastrous. i don't know what our final record will be but smu fans live in hope.
i'm very excouraged by going to the 3-4. something we should have done long ago.

i guess i'm hoping for a few wins but i want to win at least six. i'm so tired of losing.

Recruiting for 2011 will be the fruit that grows out of this years record.

JJ has brought in some good talent but now we have to show some W's. How many is a good question. I want 11 wins. Now that I am not dreaming anymore, how about 4 to 5 and maybe even 6.

If the offense score we can win games. At the end of last year we could have won against some good teams with just one more score.

We will see you all on the Boulevard. Mustang Militia wear is available.

We must win at least 4 games this year....MUST!

Stephen F. and 3 others.

And I think we will.

I do know a loss to SFA would be a(nother) huge kick in the tenders.

I don't know about recruiting but I do know I need a winning season fix. I hope it is this season.

I agree that four wins or more is almost a necessity this year. In addition SMU must be competitive in all the games. Another one or perhaps two win season would be disatrous. The problem is that all the eggs are in one basket at the most important position, QB. If Mitchell goes down the season is probably over which is one of the problems with this type of offense. If he were to go down Jones won't have much slack cut for him either, in the media and among all but hard core SMU fans.

Everybody relax...We will win at least six games this season and we will go to the Hawaii Bowl. We will give TCU a great game and will get National recognition for it. This is the year that we turn it all around and you can thank the 'Big Guy' for it all - JJ. The sad thing is that the same negative posters on here will still be crying the same old negative tunes.

We need to win some games absolutely and four would show some real improvement. We have some very winnable games this year. SFA, WAZZU, Tulane, UAB, Marshall and Rice. Will we win all of those games? Probably not, but we should do well in those games. No team in CUSA is untouchable from week to week. Tulsa, ECU, UH, Navy, and UTEP have shown that they are not invinceable and can lose a game here and there. If we get Navy on a sunny day with a good track to run on, it should be a good game. In all honesty, this is our weakest schedule in years since we don't have Tech on it. The question mark will be whether the OL can give BLM the time to do his thing. If they can, this could be a very entertaining and heart-stopping year.

Wasn't that one of the big question marks last year too? I remember being presently surprised. Are all of them back and did we give up a bunch of sacks last year?

Unfortunately with this economy, SMU has fallen off a lot of people's radar screens. I know for me personally, SMU football and basketball is not a priority for me any more. SMU has had it's chance to 'come back' time and time again but they could never capitalize.

For the record, I think every year that SMU athletics survives...it's a huge season!

I dont think the economy has anything to do with the SMU fan base, you saying we would draw twice as many fans when the DOW was at 14000 ?

SMU has had little chance during previous periods to be truly competitive. SMU now has a Model in place where things will start happening. More patience will be required to build the program year by year though. Let's see how they do during a period from 3-5 years after the implementation of those changes.
