Cashing in on turnovers

Post by TacoPony »

We could use some improvement in this area in order to do a better job to put games away.

This season we've scored 21 points off 11 turnovers.
While our opponents have scored more points off fewer turnovers. (27 points off 6 turnovers)

The big difference is that we've given up 3 big returns on turnovers: 2 long interception returns by SFA to bring the ball to the SMU 5 and eventually punch it in; and one interception return for TD by UAB. (so it's not necessarily a comment on our Defense)

Meanwhile our returns have been for 0, 0, 4, 0, 0, 0, 16, 0, 6, 25, and 0 yards.

This is in no way a criticism... we've made diving interceptions, and one in the end zone,
and this early in the season it could be a statistical aberration.

As our offense gets more in gear, we can put together more sustained drives following turnovers... and we need to have the skill & luck it takes to avoid the long returns against us.

I'll call it my Stat of the Week, and let's keep this Mustang tide rolling...

We have to cause turnovers in the WSU game and convert them into points. I hope it will be a lot of points for SMU.

The returns have killed us...the extra possessions are great and can even turn the field position game around. As long as we're hanging 35+ points things will be good if were forcing turnovers.

This is by far the key to victory and getting that "killer" instinct.

Get a turnover, and make the other team pay for it. Don't go 3 and out. We did that a lot in the last 2 games.

If not for the 3 successive SMU turnovers in the second half, we probably blow out UAB.

I note that 2 of them came on personnel changes: Braden Smith in at QB (Fumble) and Zach Line in at RB - from what I heard on the radio, it was during their first plays in those respective series. (I realize it wasn't their first plays of that game).

I realize that JJ wants to get everyone some PT, but perhaps with 21pt lead on a team used to losing isn't the best time for substitutions...just saying.

On the other hand, more PT will calm some of those substitution jitters. And... if not with a 21 point lead, when?
Go Ponies!!
