QB Competition...

Post by westexSMU »

I haven't seen Braden Smith play or scrimmage, but I assume JJ feels Bo doesn't have any competition this year. Obviously Bo looked pretty good in the 1st half. However, history tells us when he starts throwing interceptions, its probably going to continue until he gets settled down. Has he had a game yet where he did not through an interception for a touchdown or at least one returned inside our 10 yardline ? Because of the history, It just seems to me that it makes since to put in your 2nd string QB for a while to try to calm BLM down competition or not....and I don't get why we are throwing into triple coverage on a sideline route with a 24-7 lead late in the game. Without interceptions for touchdowns, they can't move the ball ? The way our defense was playing, this game should have been a blowout.

I agree with you westex. Why keep throwing the ball with a good lead late in the game. Run the ball and run the clock. Let your defense make some plays.

Bo is apparently "our guy" regardless as you said because he has no competition, but Coach still has got to get the young man to stop forcimg the ball into triple coverage at critical times of the game. I just made a suggestion. If Coach Jones has the better way, I'm all for it. At this point, its interceptions for touchdowns or INTs into our red zone regularly.I just look forward to the games when he doesn't throw an interception for a touchdown. When that happens, we will WIN regularly.

I originally thought, based on the XM Radio play-by-play (Wash State's pt of view), that the passes were throws to the flats on the long side of the field. I saw some video of the three pics, and since I was wrong about the kind of pass BLM was throwing, I've had to adjust my thinking. The only reason that I can think of that would have BLM throwing into that kind of coverage that late in the game while not having done that during the 1st half is defensive coverage adjustments. The radio guys kept calling out this one play that was bread and butter for SMU during the 1st half. It was a "zag-in-then-out" or "post-out". I have no clue what they were really seeing; however, based on the view of the pics, if WSU's coverage moved, then BLM got a different look, and he either ignored it, or was fooled by it. I hesitate to speculate anymore precisely because I didn't see the game (and I was wrong once about it already), but it would make sense that the offense (BLM or the receivers) saw something that had them fooled, or they didn't read the coverage the right way. The radio guys also kept making a point that BLM was throwing into tight coverages, but that WSU was blowing the coverage when the ball was two feet from the LB or DB. If that's the case, they just waited on the law of large numbers. BLM or a receiver just missed the read.

June refuses to sit BLM and calm him down. What is the big deal with sitting a guy for 10 minutes to get his composure.

Maybe the concern is that sitting him would damage his psyche because it would allow him to obsess about a mistake, rather than forgetting it, like a relief pitcher who gives up a home run, and moving on?

Good point - that's the real culprit.

Actually,Stallion should shoulder perhaps most of the blame for going all gumdrops and lollipops on us in the 3rd, pointing out that BLM had no INTs up to that point. I knew something was wrong then. Enough with the sunshine Stallion, let's all stick our roles
