June Jones' cryptic comment

Post by 1983 Cotton Bowl »

In one of the many interviews, press conferences, article quotes, etc. that June Jones had this week, he made a very interesting comment. . .something to the effect that he had come to SMU to do something specific, but that he wasn't willing to reveal what that was at this time. For the life of me, I don't remember where I read or heard that comment from June, but I distinctly remember the comment itself and I know it was made sometime after the Tulane game. Anyone else catch that? I'm really wondering what June has in mind.

Yes, it was audio.....I think.
Was either during the Hawaii Bowl acceptance party thing, or when he was on the ticket.

It was in the video on the post game Tulane press conference. I guess we won't know until he is ready to tell us.

It is things like this that I pointed to when my friends with no relationship to SMU would suggest June might leave SMU. I just said it wasn't going to happen. There are not many schools that can afford to hire JJ away from SMU and of those schools, either (i) he doesn't want to put up with their BS; or (ii) they don't want to put up with him and let him run the show in the manner of his choosing.

Let's be honest. June is a different kind of cat. He knows that and he isn't about to even consider changing. That is why I believe him when he says this is his last coaching job.
At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

"I knew I came here for a reason – one day I'll share that with you," Jones said. "I've been on a lot of teams, a lot of winning teams. But these guys have really honored the spirit of God, to be quite honest. ... It only happens to me in these situations where you've been losing for so long. It makes it really special when you get it turned around."

Whatever "reason" he came here for, I think it's safe to say it involves winning!

Until June is willing to share, I'll just operate under the blissful assumption that his secret goal is to be the first non-bcs school to play in the national championship game :)

So in keeping with that assumption, let me just close by saying "GO TEXAS! BEAT NEBRASKA!"

I think it might have something to do with his near fatal car accident.

Orsini, last September, said something about Jones feeling his life had been spared for a special purpose and it involved SMU in some way. Sorry, don't have the quote, but I heard it.

You misunderstood what the General said..He said he DID care...i.e. "I could care less".

Agree with the first sentence. Not so sure about the last two.

Exactly. I don't care as much as others do. I'm intrigued.

BTW, did anyone notice at the beginning of the press conference for the Aloha bowl, that he was the only smart one? He got a little sugar from the cheerleader and Orsini and Turner didn't.

My guess is that JJ just wanted to see how far he could take SMU. At Hawaii, he had a football program with no real money and huge red tape. Not to mention the most incompetent Athletic Director in college football history.

SMU has the billionaire donors, great facilities, great recruiting area for the R&S, and an AD department to make it happen. More support than what he had at Hawaii. A chance of a life time? Plus he would have enough money to take care of his family.

Or it just might be that, PLUS he also wanted to be close to his son who was already living in Dallas before JJ came to SMU. JJ got divorced after he survived and recouped from the car crash. Most HCs spend so much time coaching and winning that the family time takes the back seat. At Hawaii, JJ went to a BCS bowl. Maybe it was time to kill two birds with one stone. Make it up to his kid and have complete support to build a winning football program. Like I said previously, it was a chance of a life time. The timing was ripe. Unfortunate for Hawaii, SMU was at the right place at the right time.

JJ is very private when it comes to his family.

When he achieves his goals in SMU football, then he would be comfortable talking about his family and his decision to coach at SMU.
