SMU's bowl bid creates a buzz at SL Carroll

UNIVERSITY PARK - Since SMU was invited to the Dec. 24 Sheraton Hawaii Bowl, freshman quarterback Kyle Padron's phone has been ringing.
"Kids from my high school have been calling me to see if they have any scholarships available," he said. "They're sending me their tapes and stuff."
Padron went to Southlake Carroll, and he can sense the buzz SMU's postseason appearance has generated. So can coach June Jones, who has sent his assistants out on recruiting missions in recent weeks.
"The response has been positive," he said. "There's a lot more interest."

Trip to Hawaii has one drawback
UNIVERSITY PARK - Although few bowl destinations are as attractive as Hawaii, the location of the game creates a problem from a recruiting standpoint. From Dec. 19-25, when the Mustangs are off the mainland, SMU won't be able to send its staff to visit prospects.
"It's a swap," coach June Jones said. "We have had a week [to recruit] when all these other teams were still playing."
