USC vacancy
Someone at ESPN is mentioning Oregon State's Mike Riley, Stanford's Jim Harbaugh and ... Gary Patterson?
He has done a good job at Frog High, but I just can't see his act translating to the masses at SC.

Re: USC vacancy
The Washington Coach should be looked at as well.

I hope Harbaugh goes, it may help us get the Browning kid we are recruiting
Re: USC vacancy
Riley has done a fantastic job at Oregon State. But I never like to see head coaches move around within the same conference. Too much opportunity for conflicts of interest in recruiting.

They've been talking about it all day on the Atlanta Sports Radio airwaves about Lane Kiffin going to USC? Personally, I think he's put it too much work making inroads in the South for recruiting to leave, but it could be an interesting possibility.

Re: USC vacancy
I think USC has got a problem on its hands. Rumors are swirling that they are about to get nailed with probation and other sanctions, and the "other shoe" is supposedly close to falling. Who is going to go there and deal with that? Carroll saw the writing on the wall and made the jump. He's going to come out smelling like a rose ($7M x 5 yrs) after leaving USC with a big bag of poo poo.

Re: USC vacancy
To me, this is one of the biggest problems in college athletics; specifically football and basketball. A coach can do whatever it takes to win, and mortgage the future of a program to succeed in the present, leave, and then the school's left in ruins and the coach gets out with a full pass. See John Calipari; the guy's technically never won a national championship. He left UMass in shambles, and I would be surprised if Memphis didn't end up the same way. Not all the problems can always be tied directly to the coach, but ultimately he's responsible for his program.
The other thing that really ticks me off is the coaching vacancy procedure. The NCAA needs to institute a policy, that just as in recruiting there's a dead period. If you fire your coach, you can talk to whoever you want, unless the candidate is currently employed and hasn't completed his season yet. These candidates should be off limits until season's end. If a school wants this person bad enough they'll wait. If not, they'll hire someone who's already available.

looks like Pete is leaving before the big bomb gets dropped on SC about this whole McKnight and Bush scandal gets fully cracked open, which shouldn't be long with all the new allegations coming about with Mayo.
can you say death penalty USC 2010? hahaha long shot

A loss of scholarships and 4 year bowl ban will do the same trick as the dp. But still allow the school to rebuild in 4 or 5 years not 25 as at SMU.

Then it's not "the same trick as the dp."
And the penalty will not be that severe. Wasn't for OKSt, wasn't for Alabama, and won't be for USC.

I really hope it's not Jeff Fisher. I'm a huge Titans fan, so I'l like to see him stay put.

Re: USC vacancy
If Lane Kiffin wasn't so insane, I'd say he's a more viable candidate. But he ruffled a lot of feathers with his entry into Tennessee.
I'd bet Fisher stays where he is, unless the Titans fire him. No way he should leave the NFL to walk into years of probation and restrictions.
