Another position change

Post by PonyPride »

Braden Smith will be playing safety in spring ball. It seems he might still take some snaps at quarterback every now and then, but he's going to get a shot to get some playing time at safety.

Good Deal-his Dad switched positions and became an All-SWC caliber player at Baylor. If he ain't going to start at QB under any condition-amd I think that's the consensus give him a shot somewhere else.

I know Braden will work his butt off and do anything it takes to get on the field. I wish him well.

There is not going to be much room for him at the wildcat type QB with some of the recruits coming in.

He is going to make a great coach when his playing days are over. All business and a team guy.

Just what I was thinking — this move will only add to his desire to be a coach. He knows offense as a player and studied defenses, and now he'll get to learn both from the other perspective.

Braden Smith will be a dynamite coach. Good luck on defense — here's an early standing O for your first big hit.

I like QBs who become safeties; a guy named Cromwell comes to mind.

Braden reminds me of Rob Moershell from HP/UT. I remember Freddy Akers moved him from QB to RB and he did very well.

I would think he could pick up the position rather quickly. He seems to have good football instincts, plus he's pretty quick.

I also think this is a great move by Braden and the coaches. Braden is a student of the game and will have a solid understanding of quarterback mentality as he roams the secondary.

It also adds a little more depth at secondary without affecting our significant QB depth (Padron, McDermott, Kaiser).

Great move!!

I agree with the move wholeheartedly. Braden is a smart guy and a good athlete.
If he really wants to be a coach, getting experience on both sides is a no-brainer.
Great decision by the coaches, and good call by Braden to make the move. I bet he ends up surprising some people.

I would think with Bo Levi transferring the coaches may reconsider this.

It'd be nice to have a backup QB in place who has taken SOME snaps at the college level.

Or John Lynch. He came to Stanford as a QB, then he wasn't getting any playing time at the position and he was moved to Safety (I believe the great Bill Walsh was the coach at the time). We all know how that turned out for him

can't have enough talented QBs, who are frequently the best athlete on their H.S. teams...to fill out several roster spots at the next level. How many former QBs will we have on next year's roster?
