Gilliam Named First-Team All-Conference USA

IRVING (SMU) - SMU senior Brittany Gilliam was named First Team All-Conference USA after guiding the Mustangs to a third consecutive 20-win season, the league office announced Saturday.

Gilliam finished the season seventh in the conference averaging 15.1 points per game, 13th in rebounding with 6.4 boards per contest, and second in assists, handing out 5.1 per game, which is 35th in the country. The Tyler, Texas native posted a team-high five double-doubles, and eclipsed 20 points six times.

The 5-11 guard is sixth all-time at SMU with 1,437 points, fourth at SMU and tenth in C-USA history with 429 assists, and second at SMU and 13th on the conference charts with 250 steals.

She was twice named Conference USA Player of the Week this season, earning the accolade on Jan. 25 and March 5. Gilliam passed out a career-high 11 assists against UTEP on Jan. 15, and sank a career-high 10 field goals against Rice on Feb. 12. She also recorded a career-high with six steals against Houston on Jan. 30.

Houston junior Courtney Taylor, Memphis senior Brittany Carter, Southern Miss senior Pauline Love and Tulsa senior Larrissa Williams were also named to the First Team.

Gilliam and the Mustangs will face the winner between six-seed UAB and 11-seed Tulsa in the quarterfinals of the 2010 GMC Sierra C-USA Championship Tuesday at 6 p.m.

IMO, Jillian Samuels got robbed! Jareica Hughes has had an amazing career at UTEP but she's not even in the top 20 in scoring this year for conference play. Jillian is #8 on the list. That's a shame - good kid, good player.

Hughes got votes based more on her reputation, than on her performance. People are used to thinking of her as a big deal, but she isnt the same player when she doesnt have the supporting cast around her, that UTEP used to have.
