Have Academic Casualties...

Post by PonyDoh »

been reported on yet? Word has it that we're losing more then a couple starters for grades, and almost double digits overall. Is that possible?

If this is true, someone needs to be fired for not guiding these guys to the "right" professors. There are courses at SMU that ANYONE can pass. I saw complete morons get through the engineering school just by badgering the professor into giving them the answer on things, giving them extra credit, etc. etc. I saw a woman who was a senior engineering student ask in the last day of class before a final in a statistics class: "Why can't you have a probability greater than 100%?" There is no excuse for academic casualties.

It's not good at all, but, there is still an appeal opportunity for a couple of them.

there is no point to a free board other then uniformed speculation.

What does the run'n'shoot pride itself on?

How bout this, I appeal to Coach June Jones to recruit kids that can stay eligible at SMU. This isn't Hawaii. It's a small private w/an academic rep. People ooo and ahh all day, but there are reasons both revenue jobs remain quite difficult.

danggit...I've been dreading news like this for a long time. If you're going to allow marginal qualifiers (like I think we should), you've got to make special dispensation for them.

I know a kid who's on scholarship at UT with a serious learning disability. UT told his family he wouldn't have to worry about passing as long as they saw effort. I don't know that we don't have that policy here but I'm guessing we don't.

How about, since we're a private institution, we make our own rules and create a bunch of easy classes for any of these guys who need it? Really, what's wrong with that? June Jones/Gerald J Ford v the faculty?

I would say QB, but I'm guessing it is our WR.

Can't they make grades up over summer?

I thought the whole point of opening the school of education was to stash athletes from academically-troubled backgrounds?

If Padron is really ineligable then something is very wrong. Either we have a football-hating professor, or more likely, Padron needs a beating. A kid out of Southlake should be able to stay eligable.

Let's all calm down a little bit. SMU hasn't even posted all final grades yet — that won't happen until next week at the earliest. At this point, what we're talking about is nothing more than speculation.

If some are lost, can they regain it in summer school? No idea how this works.
When will I start feeling stimulated??
