Re: Admissions just KILLED recruiting....
Unless there is some behavior issue by passing the NCAA Clearinghouse he would be admitted to about 85-90% of all Division 1A schools including all Texas schools without question except Rice. Turner stated when hiring Jones that changes had been made to the admission process that made SMU nationally competitive in admissions and that SMU can recruit players who can play at any other schools and June Jones later stated that he had been assured that was the case. Dutch, you need to watch this movie.

All the facts about this case are not public information. Read the article closer. There were questions about his academic standing when he committed. This is what happens with taking a chance on partial or non qualifiers. Sometimes you lose.

The problem is we may never really know the reason why he wasn't accepted, because it can't be public knowledge for privacy reasons. Weird deal.
Re: Admissions just KILLED recruiting....
seems like the most likely reason would be SAT/ACT related, but that's just speculationponyscott wrote:The problem is we may never really know the reason why he wasn't accepted, because it can't be public knowledge for privacy reasons. Weird deal.
Re: Admissions just KILLED recruiting....
SMU has an elevated core requirement, that simple. Kid qualifies, gets through the clearinghouse, but still doesn't have the core GPA for admission. My understanding was that Dedman passed this w/o consulting the AD or program heads. Not sure if that's true or not. Kid probably didn't close particularly strong academically
What's odd is how differently this played out than the Ricmonds Vilde situation. No consistency in verdicts, unless there are extenuating circumstances.

“When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.”- Jalen Jones

Re: Admissions just KILLED recruiting....
I wish someone would clarify this point. I know that used to be the case and I cited that problem many times over the years but the NCAA has slowly raised core curriculum from 13, 14 and now 16(August 1, 2008) over the years. Has SMU raised theirs as well. I'm not so sure that is still the case.

Re: Admissions just KILLED recruiting....
never heard so much hullaballoo based on so little info! can anyone address stallions very pertinent core question above? not sure saying "if they are ncaa eligible, we can get them in" is the same as "ncaa eligibility is automatic acceptance." are we not overlooking the responsibility to perform academically for the senior year--that MUST be in the letter of intent contract, is it not?
bottom line is, we are now recruiting border line academics along with all the other football powers. are we too new to this arena to do it as seemlessly as the "other guys"?
don't think losing two players is the end of the world recruiting-wise, though. maybe it is, but don't think we have enough info to say that.

Without all of the info - it is hard for outsiders to make a judgement on this. What if this is a Malin sort of scenario with the SAT score and insiders at SMU know it? Perhaps they think it best to stay far, far away.
