SMU to buy Mrs. Baird's Plant
I noticed the headline on the DallasNews.com home page. I am not signed up with the site.
A (on/near campus) presidential library would bring prestige, visitors and researchers to SMU.
But, if SMU isn't GWB's choice, the Mrs. Baird's property is a good location for expanded Intramural/intercollegiate sports (baseball field, competition-worthy track, etc.) facilities.
SMU is smart to acquire property proximate to campus whenever possible.

BASEBALL BASEBALL BASEBALL
Rundown:
6.6 acres of on the southwest corner of Mockingbird and Central Expressway, going to cost about $7 million according to the article. SMU claims it's not specifically for luring the library to Dallas, it just is always good to grab land when it's nearby the campus.

Depends on the president, I'd say. That's neither a slam or an endorsement of GWB, but I just don't think all presidential libraries would create the same impression.Originally posted by Cheesesteak:

Now you're talking - more athletic facilities. Baseball, intramurals .... that's what I want to see. Maybe the world's largest sand pit (which Coach Faucette wants for his athletes) to train in.
SMU has quietly acquired a lot of property around campus already. It will be interesting to see what's done with it.

Thats a great move. Grow or die.

In the meantime we can use the building for the bakery science department so that we can admit some academically limited football players.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

Let's be sensitive here, Eaststang. I think you mean academically "challenged."

What other property has SMU acquired around campus? Thanks in advance.

A lot of those houses on SMU Blvd. (formerly Yale Blvd.) on the north side of the street have been purchased by the school over the years.Originally posted by Cheesesteak:

:p How many of you can remember walking the campus with the smell of fresh bread in the air... ? Probably made football practice a little nicer for almost 5 decades of Mustangs.

If you grew up in the Park Cities, you remembered it well. It was always GREAT when the teachers would open the windows at the junior high (later middle school) just west of SMU and you'd smell that aroma while sitting in your classroom. Heaven!

A group of we players would make frequent trips to Bairds in the wee hours of the morning, and request the tour of the facility. They would walk you through the process and at the end take a fresh loaf off the conveyor belt and tear off big hunks for each person. They had soft butter to apply. After a few visits they got used to us and let us go straight to the "end of ther line" for the bread. I guess the NCAA would have shut us down for that had they known it was going on.

SMU is also buying up the University Gardens apartments. I think they own almost all of them now.Originally posted by Cheesesteak:

Were elementary school students in Park Cities still touring Mrs. Bairds when you were in school?
