Turf

Post by Pony_Fan »

Kyle was commenting how much he hates turf on FB.

Didn't Ford start out as grass? - is it less costly to have turf I assume?

over the long run, yes turf is cheaper. This is one of the reasons so many HS are going to it.

As with School districts, you can also play two or three games a week and not wear out your field.

A new turf carpet runs around $1M to $1.5M. It costs $90 to $120K per year to keep a grass field playable with multiple teams using the field. The turf can last up to 20 years before it has to be replaced and the annual maint. costs are minimal. Plus any game that takes place in the rain/snow can make the field almost unplayable until summer or the field gets re-sodded.

Me - I agree with KP. The stuff is evil. What nobody ever tells you about the turf is that on hot days it retains heat. It is like running on a baking sheet. All of those black spacers on the turf also come up while you are running and stick to the back of your calves. It is like getting stung by bees on really hot days.

He threw for 400 yards on turf at the Hawaii Bowl. I think he'll be OK on turf.

We need the turf because, with no indoor facility, we can practice on it in wet conditions.

Also, we proved inept at maintaining the grass. Not only did the hill beyond the end zone catch fire at a football game, at the last soccer final four at Ford the field was a mud pit. That, and an inability to market the games (sound familiar?) is what cost us the chance to host future soccer final fours.

SMU could have become a semi-permanent, or even permanent, host to the soccer final fours, for whatever that is worth. But we couldn't grow grass and didn't spend a dime to market the event in one of the nation's youth soccer hotbeds.

He just got some turf burns the other day. He'll be fine.

Besides, I have read where some of the new turf is thought to be even better than natural grass as far as preventing ankle and knee injuries.
