Men's soccer beats Tulsa, 3-2

Post by PonyPride »

The SMU men's soccer team, which entered the game ranked No. 6 in the country, twice rallied from one-goal deficits to beat Conference USA rival and 17th-ranked Tulsa, 3-2.

SMU tied the score, 1-1, when defender Adam Still fired a long pass forward from about 75 yards out that bounced over the Tulsa goalkeeper and into the net (on an assist by goalkeeper Craig Hill). In the second half, forward Arthur Ivo blasted a free kick from about 40 yards that slipped through the Tulsa keeper's hands to tie the score, 2-2. Freshman midfielder Robbie Dershang scored the game-winner when he raced through the Tulsa defense, juked a pair of defenders and fired a shot into the lower right corner of the goal.

With the victory, SMU improves to 12-1 on the season.

That was the first soccer game that I have been to at SMU in a few years and it was a good one.

It was pretty scary for SMU in the last ten or fifteen minutes with a lot of chaos in front of SMU's goal.

From SMUMustangs.com:

No. 6 SMU Downs No. 17 Tulsa 3-2
Adam Still nets a 75-yard goal

Oct. 20, 2010

DALLAS (SMU) - The No. 6 SMU men's soccer team fought off two one-goal deficits to defeat No. 17 Tulsa 3-2. Adam Still, Arthur Ivo and Robbie Derschang all scored for the Mustangs. With the win, SMU moves to 12-1-0 on the season and is now 4-1-0 in Conference USA action.

"We were in a battle," said head coach Tim McClements. "Tulsa is a very good team. I thought we came out of the gates a little bit sluggish and gave up a goal. Then we scored a very fortunate goal, so it was kind of a night of crazy goals. But I think that they guys hung in there and did the things that they needed to do. It was a battle from start to finish, and Robbie's goal at the end - we were really happy that he scored. Any time you win in the conference, you take it."

Still put SMU on the board with his goal in the fifth minute. Goalkeeper Craig Hill passed the ball up to Still, who sent the ball in to the offensive end from 75 yards out. The ball bounced over Tulsa's goalie's head and in to tie the game at one. The goal was Still's first of his career. The assist was Hill's second helper of the season and second of his career.

Ivo tallied his goal in the 62nd minute on a free kick awarded to SMU following a Tulsa hand ball violation. Ivo fired a shot from 40 yards out that hit the goalie and trickled over the goal line to knot the game at two. The goal was Ivo's sixth of the season.

In the 69th minute, Derschang netted the game-winner. After receiving the ball at midfield from Ivo, Derschang dribbled 40 yards down field before sending the ball into the far upper 90 from 20 yards out. The goal was Derschang's fifth of the year and second game-winner.

Hill made seven saves on the night for the Mustangs. Hill's biggest save came with 30 second remaining in the game, when he stopped a shot from Tulsa's Justin Chavez on the goal line following a corner kick.

Tulsa opened the scoring with a goal in just the third minute of play. Corey Alberston fired a shot from 14 yards out that was deflected by Jake Dobkins for the 1-0 lead. Following Still's goal, the Golden Hurricane regained the lead when Albertson settled a cross and scored on a shot from four yards out.

SMU heads to Memphis to take on the Tigers Saturday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. The Mustangs hold a 6-1-0 lead in the all-time series between the two schools. Memphis is 3-8-1 on the year and 0-4-1 in Conference USA action.

Had to miss it, like I have to miss all the ponyfans live shows. What was attendance like?

Attendance was 848, thanks in part to the athletes from other SMU teams who showed up. Pretty good-sized crowd.

Here's a clip of Adam Still's goal:

a very entertaining game. SMU has a wealth of highly skilled, very talented players many of whom are freshmen. If this team can tighten its defense, it will go far this year.

Great night, great crowd, and a huge win!

Sure the first two goals were bad goals, but the game-winner was absolutely beautiful.

There is some fantastic freshman talent on this team.

Great job! I had to miss the game and had planned on going...glad to see they won without me! That 75 yard goal is a rarity, but will take it!
Congrats!

No such thing as a "bad goal". Maybe a lucky goal. Anyway, as I saw it, first goal was a result of keeper misjudging the ball because we had a man breaking towards him although aways out. Second goal was the result of keeper not being able to handle a hard shot. Both good goals.
