C-USA Ranking/Bowl Question

Post by SMU Hockey 2010 »

If Houston loses to USM or Tulsa and we win out, we become #1 in C-USA West. We would then play in the C-USA championship.

If we lose in the 'ship, do we become the #2 C-USA seed for bowl picking purposes, or does actual W/L record then come back into play, leaving us at #5 or #6?
We've never lost the tailgate.

Besides the conf. champion, I don't think the ranking of the bowl eligible teams matters. What is more important is what order the bowls pick in. They will want the biggest draw whether that is the team with the best record, or more importantly perceived drawing power (most likely regional in nature). It's all about butts in seats and secondarily the TV draw.

quite frankly there is no real order to CUSA Bowl selection based on standings. Even the Liberty Bowl is not set in Stone although I'm sure they get first choice. I believe Hawaii Bowl gets second "choice" but not necessarily the Second best team. CUSA Commissioner in discussion with with the Bowls will place teams in Bowls that make the most geographic and economic sense.

To be eligible for a bowl by NCAA rule, a team must have 6 wins (1 of which can be from a FCS team), OR be the conference champion. In addition, in the case that a team plays 13 games (including conference championships) a team must have 7 wins to be bowl eligble.

If we were to make the conf. champ game and lose to UCF and complete the season with only 6 wins... technically we would not be bowl eligble. The NCAA is considering allowing 5-7 teams go to bowls in the case where there are not enough 6+ win teams to fill all of the bowl slots. The NCAA also could consider letting in a 6-7 team, one that reaches its conference title game with a .500 record and loses attend bowl games (presumably before 5-7 teams).

To summarize... win out and we're good!

If you appear in your conference championship and lose, leaving you under .500, you must apply for a waiver in order to be bowl eligible. At that point, basically the NCAA will see if your conference has contractual obligations unfulfilled, and would only approve you in that situation.

To make things even more complicated, the Liberty Bowl can jettison the CUSA team to the Birmingham Bowl in exchange for the Big East team in the Birmingham Bowl, starting this year.

that's what I was referring to-based on an interview with Liberty Bowl President. I don't want to go to Memphis anyway
