Army / Triple Option / Sterling Moore

Post by ponydawg »

While we haven't faired well against the Triple Option, with Sterling Moore out I am glad this is their offense. Looks like they throw less than Navy. With Moore out, do you just line up your best back up tackler at DB as opposed to whoever is the best pass defender?

Unfortunately, Sterling is our best run support DB IMO. I dont think we should just throw a good tackler out there tho. Who ever is out there this week needs to be able to do both.

We have 15 practices to prepare for the triple option with the added bonus of seeing it once already this year. With the triple option more then any other offense, the more time you have to prepare and the more times you see it, the more effective you should become against it.

Eric Schumann is available. He's the only SMU defensive coordinator since the Pony Express days who could coach'em up to defend the option. Maybe he could give the boys a pep talk.

Navy rushing output versus SMU the last 3 seasons

2008- 404
2009- 331
2010- 253

The defense is getting better at defending the triple option.

Army switched their gamepaln against Hawaii in the second half. These guys can throw too.

Any triple option team can throw it given the attention that defenses pay to the running game. We've been burnt several times in the air by Dobbs in our last 2 games with Navy. Army will take their shots too.

We will be healthy at d-line and LB for the Army game. I am looking forward to watching a defensive performance similar to what we saw against Nevada last year.

Longtime, interesting that you noticed how Schumann was seemingly very skilled at coaching defenses against option teams. I have always thought that same thing.

I am guessing that Moore will be available for Army. Watching him go off the field his injury did not seem to be extremely severe and he seems to have remarkable recuperative powers. Hope his surgery will enable him to try for the NFL. Not the same at all but John Lagrone had surgery for a knee injury, which in those days was major surgery, and came back much sooner than expected.

yeah even on the field Saturday he was "walking it out". I was shocked he wasn't showing too much pain or limp. I'm not sure he should medically be on the field but if he recovered from the others he'll likely recover from this one.
