Idea: Your small way to help athletics
Everybody's financial situation is different. I get that and recognize that you can only do what you can do. But in order to accomplish the goals this athletic department needs to accomplish, there needs to be a solid foundation.
Perhaps you can increase your donation level by $50 or 100 or $200. If enough people think they can swing that, it all adds up. Plus, you get the tax write-off.
Heck, maybe you can talk a friend, who likes SMU, to join the Mustang Club for the $50 level.
I really don't care what ammenities come with what I'm donating. I just want to help the athletic department.
There are about 2600-2700 members in the Mustang Club. I'm told they want to get it up to around 4500.
We care about the future of the program(s). Challenge yourself to see what you are willing to do to help.

True - unfortunately I don't think the Mustang Club does a very good job selling themselves and what it does for the programs.
After a Army win - hopefully we'll see another increase in season ticket holders and donations.

Mitch give $10,000 and set a starting example . For every 10,000 you give I will match it with $1

This is changing in 2011. I have joined national council and so far 50 people have signed up to make a major push forward - mainly targeting those outside of DFW

I'll give what I can, but I don't know what you're capable of doing. That's none of my business. Just challenge yourself to see what you can do.

Re: Idea: Your small way to help athletics
I'd like to see them set up a mechanism we could donate directly to something such as the IPF. I don't have tons of cash to give but that is a place I'd like to give another thousand bucks.

Re: Idea: Your small way to help athletics
Agree, the Mustang Club doesn't sell itself well.
Part of the problem is it seems like there's constant turnover in the Mustang Club staff. Other than Bob Sharp, who's a lifer, I don't really know who is running things. Maybe its more that the Mustang Club honchos need a higher profile. I dunno, maybe it's just me, but you used to always know who was in charge of the Mustang Club back in the good old days.
Another problem is it hasn't been "cool" to be in the Mustang Club until recently. Now that football is winning, people will want to jump on the bandwagon.
You can't underestimate one small but very important aspect of Mustang Club membership: the car decal. You've got to get that right. Make it a sticker people would be proud to put on their windshield, and you greatly increase the Mustang Club and SMU's exposure.

Check with Tim Leonard, they may have something like that already in place.

I agree the car sticker is important, it needs to look cool and distinguish 5+ years, 10+ years, and 20+ years.

He is the one that got the athletic database synced with the university database. The Mustang Club had no clue who people were. He also spearheaded the phone calls from the student athletes. Things are finally moving in the right direction. From the schedules I have seen it will be a work in progress and will take time.

And not a sticker that isn't readable unless someone is close enough to your car to hit you if you have to slam on the brakes.
