Re: 2012 USC Commit Jordan Payton Visiting SMU
There are some services who think he might be the best player in the state of California for 2012. The fact that we are even in the conversation for such a highly touted recruit really speaks to the kind of impact Coach Klemm is having out on the West Coast.
Back off Warchild seriously.

Great news that we are really competing for a recruit like this guy. If we continue to get great recruits out of California and even do better in the future, the PAC 12 may have to let SMU in just to look like they are keeping these recruits in the area !

Is there any chance we are using that in our recruiting out there? Conversations about movement to pac 10?
Just amazing what we have accomplished out there...

I think the bigger question here isn't why this kid might be looking outside of his commitment to USC, but that SMU is the school that seems to be rising to the top of his list. We are setting up shop in California.

I don't consider it a question of why SMU does well in Cali, The coaches have ties to the area and know the FB scene (june recruited there at Hawaii), We are another warm weather destination and we have hot girls, Everything a Cali kid wants.

We play in a meaningless conference half the country away when he has offers from virtually every major BCS program in the nation. Why are we the only non AQ school in the mix for him?

I will ask my brother who is in tight with Utah AD if he see any expansion...I think they are done until the big 12 breaks up, but you never know...
Re: 2012 USC Commit Jordan Payton Visiting SMU
One thing to keep in mind with all of this Southern California recruiting is that Fox Sports West used to show just about every Hawaii football game live or on a replay basis for a number of years when JJ was the head coach at Hawaii and had some very good years at Hawaii. When the WAC extended their deal with ESPN, one way they got more money was to force an end to those types of secondary deals...but there is a generation of recruits in Southern California where JJ's teams were playing the only football game to watch Saturday night after the Pac-10 games were over.
It might not even be a conscious thing, but it wouldn't be a stretch to think that current recruits watched college football when they were growing up...and having that much access to Hawaii football games on TV in Southern California probably raised the awareness of JJ in that area.
I remember being so jealous because I was in Northern California and couldn't see the games. I scheduled many visits to one of my wife's best friends (grad student at UC-Irvine) that were "coincidentally" on Hawaii football game weekends, so my wife could chat with her friend and I could watch the games.
I haven't seen this mentioned before and I don't know if it really is a factor, but all of those years of having JJ's teams shown on TV (I remember one year noting that you could actually watch more Hawaii football games on TV in SoCal than UCLA games) may be a factor in SoCal being a fertile recruiting ground for SMU.

Our recruiting is predicated on two things: the R & S offence ensures you will get the ball and frequently (and in the case of SMU) you have the chance to play right away.NickSMU17 wrote:Is there any chance we are using that in our recruiting out there? Conversations about movement to pac 10?
