FORREST HAGAR: The weight is over
A year after heading home as a greyshirt, linebacker Forrest Hagar has rejoined the SMU roster and will be practicing with his teammates when the Ponies begin spring workouts Monday morning. Some greyshirts don't always take advantage of their semester away from school, but Hagar did — he enrolled in a community college to get a few classes out of the way, and worked out with a personal trainer, putting on 25 pounds in the process. Hagar visited with PonyFans.com to discuss what it was like to sit out a season, what he expects will be the biggest adjustment as he moves from defensive end to linebacker, and his initial goals for spring workouts.
Enjoy!

Forrest sounds like a good kid. Glad to see he put in the work, its going to pay off for him down the line. With the lack of depth at DE he may have his best shot to crack the lineup there on passing downs.

Re: FORREST HAGAR: The weight is over
That's cool — welcome back, Forrest!
You're right, dp123 — he definitely sounds like a good kid. And at 6-3, 240, if he still has the quickness to get to the quarterback, he could be flat-out nasty if he can pick up pass coverage. It will take a while to adjust, but man, it sounds like the tools are there to be a player. Anyone with the drive to put on 25 pounds in less than a year clearly has a good work ethic.
It wouldn't surprise me if you're right about him eventually ending up at DE. Sounds like we have an army of LBs on the roster. (Then again, if this guy can learn to play as well as he has built himself up, maybe he forces his way into the lineup in a year or two.)
Good luck, Forrest!

Good for him!! He used his time off to full advantage and am sure he will grow into much playing time.

So what's the full story? Was it determined after one day of spring practice last year that he just wasn't ready? Academic issues?

I know I didn't like it when I moved away.
Glad to have you back, Forrest. Here's hoping you open some eyes this spring.
