How it all began

Post by ThadFilms »

Two years ago yesterday, I rolled cameras for the first time on the film that eventually became Pony Excess. This is what we filmed on that fateful day:

After the first game of the season I put this together:

... and we were off to the races!!! (By the middle of the season we had that video that many of you have seen, the trailer that got us the ESPN gig.)

I would cut that stuff way differently now. I wanted it all to be "fat" (read "long") so the peeps we were going to for the ol' fundage could see that we were getting "real". But I would cut all of it tighter now. At the time we didn't have the resources for getting old school footage, so I cut stuff to show people with just what we had.

But that being said, I wouldn't be worth my salt as a filmmaker if I would do the same thing now. So the point is moot and I like living with the way that stuff is. I'm never going to be a Greedo shoots first kind of guy, and if I ever am... well then feel free to shoot me first.

True, I have made several changes to this film over the years:
http://vimeo.com/25277136

(That's why it's called v. 2.3)

But nothing I have done would be anything the average viewer would notice. It was all getting rid of as much "sophomore year in college" hubris as I could. That film has enough hubris as it is. It's kind of embarrassing still to watch because it oozes with that "I think I'm great" mentality.

...

Anyway, yeah... that stuff would be tightened up. And that stuff was never meant to sell the film as a whole, or for public consumption... those vids were more progress reports. Stuff to show investors and potential investors, that yes we are actually getting stuff.

I always noticed that little twitch with FG in the opening shot right after he says it will never happen again.

The youtube link goes to a Jamesion whiskey commercial. Did something get taken down?

Thank you. Yes. Glad someone picked up on it. I was trying to think of a funny way to let people watch the other video (preview) first until someone took the time to point it out. Here's the original first day footage only.

You sneaky bastage... yup... it's a jump cut. In between those two statements FG halts and hesitates, and uses some "um"s and "uh"s before moving into that next statement. Figured it was stronger that way (the way you see it now) and hopefully not too many people would notice the jump cut.

(And I edited the firs post for future readers... just in case somebody cuts and pastes and passes this along... now that the joke is out!)
