Impressions from the stands
I was at the game with my father, a football coach and an SEC record holder in football. He and I came away with a few impressions:
- JJ McDermitt was impressive. Granted, it's Memphis, but McDermitt has the size and ability to play. I disagree with those that say he doesn't have a very good arm - his throws were strong and for the most part well thrown, and wasn't bad on the deep outs, one of the most difficult routes to throw to. He made one very poor decision on the interception he threw, but for the most part made good decisions. My dad, a Vandy grad, thought that if Ole Miss had a QB this decent they may have beaten BYU and Vandy. Surprised we didn't see KP, but frankly, if that poor throw was any indication, JJ was getting some practice and I understand.
- Our WR's looked OK. They flat out beat a poor Memphis secondary time and again, but had a couple of drops. We watched their best guy get beat on the deep TD pass, and that's good for us.
- Line is the player people say he is. Fantastic fit for this offense, watched him run over and by people. A gift, and glad he scored like he did.
- Our lines played very well. Our O-line looks like a D-1 line, and I haven't alway been able to say that. JJ had time and Line had holes. The D-line flat out beat Memphis - their QB ran the whole game from them.
Overall, we looked the better team from the moment we walked onto the field and we played like it. We might have gone through the motions some, but in some ways that is a good sign. Great game overall.

Thanks, Leopold, for the recap and for traveling to Memphis for the game. Traveling support is important, as we move up in class. BTW, my daughter went to Vandy and son, like me, to SMU. I like the Commodores' future under their new coach, James Franklin. He is a hell of a recruiter.

traveling is important and a fun time - Tulsa, Houston are both driveable and easy. Heading to So Miss too, should be fun.
the Ark crew puts in some miles for sure.

Congrats on the VERY impressive win. The game in Houston could be for the west title. We beat a FCS team 56-0 but you won on the road against a conference foe, 42-0. Great work! Pony Up!

Thought his gigs dried up after Richard Nixon left office

Doesn't appear that selling beer at their games helps with attendance as many on this board feel that it would at SMU games.............

Depends on the price, style, brand, and marketing of the beer/ale sold. We could advertise an Octoberfest at Ford, the worlds largest outdoor beer garden (seats and serves 32,500). For children, near beer. Can you picture JJ in Lederhosen, with a Lei, eating a hot dog and drinking from a large mug, while on the Boulevard. A real Monster of the Midway, (frank 'n stein).

Could very well be an undefeated Houston team at that time.
Could be a one loss SMU team at the time too. How fun would that be?
