I have decided that S.M.U. athletics does not need me. And I do not need it. I have better things to do with my life than care about S.M.U. and its athletics program. For too long, I have cared about matters on The Hilltop that are completely out of the control of the few remaining fans of S.M.U. athletics.

Some folks on this forum think that I got upset about something involving athletic director Steve Orsini, someone on his staff or something involving one of the athletic programs. It was no one particular incident or person that made me decide to devote less time to matters involving the Mustangs.

I have read and pondered a lot of things that have been said by other posters since joining this fan board almost 6 years ago. After much thought, I finally decided that S.M.U. athletics is ├»┬┐┬╜ overall ├»┬┐┬╜ a product that I am no longer willing to invest my money and time on. If S.M.U. athletics were a material good, it would have gone out of production a long time ago. It├»┬┐┬╜s a product that does not live up to the claims of its manufacturer. It├»┬┐┬╜s only bought by a small handful of consumers who continually complain about its quality. All the advertising and promotion in the world won├»┬┐┬╜t save a product that doesn├»┬┐┬╜t work. And that├»┬┐┬╜s what S.M.U. athletics has become, at least to me.

So many Mustang fans continue to be duped by S.M.U. president Turner and athletic director Steve Orsini with their ├»┬┐┬╜smoke-and-mirrors├»┬┐┬╜ trick. There is no true ├»┬┐┬╜commitment├»┬┐┬╜ to athletics at S.M.U. and that├»┬┐┬╜s why I will spend less money and time on it.

I won├»┬┐┬╜t be duped any longer. My eyes have finally been opened. If I attend an S.M.U. sporting event, I will go to it fully understanding that the outcome will, most likely, be a defeat because that├»┬┐┬╜s what has happened so often in the past. If the Mustangs happen to win then it├»┬┐┬╜s a pleasant surprise. Perhaps this is what the S.M.U. student body has understood all along and explains why they so seldom turn out for sporting events.

In closing, I├»┬┐┬╜d like to set the record straight: I have always posted as Mr. Mustang 1965 and always will. Yes, I was a ├»┬┐┬╜sunshiner├»┬┐┬╜ and a ├»┬┐┬╜cheerleader├»┬┐┬╜ but I am no longer.

I wish the Mustangs well in all their sporting contests.

I agree with the General, err, Mitch, err, CallenStang. USM scares the Hades out of me. We will play in that monster stadium called "The Rock" which will have 38,000 fans. That level of intimidation has never been witnessed by SMU teams, especially this one. And they beat Virginia which beat GT which is ranked! My gosh we have yet to play someone like that. And they gave Marshall one heck of a game right after squeaking past the always powerful LaTech. Their lost to a 3-4 team is more impressive than our lost to a top 25 team.

This USM team has offense and defense and more great athletes than any team in CUSA. I know, I have read their post on other fan boards so it must be true. They intercept the ball better than most teams. They crushed an undermanned Navy team with their 3rd and 4th string RBs. How can we stop them! They are just too balanced and athletic for us to beat. They plan to hang 40+ on us without much effort. And according to their players 45-14 is about the right score.

Our O line will be overwhelmed by their stellar defense. Our receivers will quiver with fear at their DBs. Line will fold like a cheap accordion when their 5├óΓé¼Γäó9├óΓé¼┬¥ LB lights him up! McDermott might as well crumble into the fetal position as he doesn't have a chance, not a chance. He hasn't been sacked since TCU, he hasn't had an under 300 yard game in weeks and he hasn't had receivers make great catches. He just doesn't have a chance. Add to that we will probably wear worn yellow jerseys to honor the might Eagles and it is just too great a recipe for disaster.

If we don't beat the Sparrows, er I mean Eagles, this week we will:

- Lose the CUSA title
- Probably will not get invited to an AQ conference
- Not get to go to a bowl
- Will lose the recruits who have committed to SMU
- Will probably have to drop to the Sun Belt conference
- and whatever else that has been mentioned on this board under the "sky is falling" senario.

We've been on a nice upward trend since Bennett quit. Think that has a bit more to do with our success than any fan (well other than the Circle of Champions and their $$$).

But now that you mentioned MM65, our recent upward trend and the fact he has returned to posting, that is just one more thing to panic about. Oh my gosh, we will be 1-11 again because a fan posted on Ponyfans just when we needed folks to stop posting!

I'm scared. They compiled over half their rushing yards and total points scared in two games. How can we play with them like Marshall? Thank god we don't have Marshall on our schedule. Otherwise more to panic about.
