Biose St MWC Exit Fee Could Be $21 Million!!!

Post by huskerpony »

If they leave this year, could be as much as $21 million. Looks like they either need to wait a year or lose a game. (I would assume they wait a year and move at the same time as the CUSA schools.)

Pretty expensive for being in a conference for only a year.

To be fair, it seems their maximum fee would be $14 million out of pocket, since theoretically the other 7 would not yet have been earned by Boise and would simply be turned over to the conference. However, that is still quite shocking. Does this exist in other conferences? I understand the incentive for schools to give a year's notice, but it seems detrimental to also incentivize mediocre performance.

Still don't think this keeps them away, this'll be made up in 2 years.

Dear big-time SMU boosters:

We need Boise to be able to leave the MWC if we are going to get to be AQ. Care to help them out with this $21 million fee a bit?

The Big 12 exit fee had a similar setup (1-yr notice= 2yrs revenue, 2-yrs notice=1yrs revenue) but their revenue structure was different in that all their bowl money was evenly distributed. TV money was based on # of appearances which would mostly be determined before the season. (No one actually paid that though because of stupid statements made by the commissioner and the fact they wanted to get CU out at the same time.)

Difference for MWC is that if a team is a BCS buster, they get to keep a good chunk of the revenue from the BCS payout.

Boise St. can ask the Simplot family for the money (really big taters), or Micron Tech., or Boise/Cascade for the filthy lucre MWC would demand.

As long as Boise signs on it is ok if it takes another year. Then we need to try to get in next year. Without Boise, we could win the west and you never know in a one game championship. We could get into a BCS bowl. After that, the road will be tougher through Boise.

I don't think their bcs distribution was granted to the conference.

Thus it would still be the 1.9 conference distribution plus 5m

$0. They gave notice before the MWC put any exit fees in place. Oops.
