i get where he is coming from and i do feel sorry for tu. if the shoe were on the other foot i would make the same argument for smu.

by some weird quirk of fate we became a pretty good football team at exactly the right time.

i can't think of a more significant win in smu history than the win over tcu.

My favorite quotes: "The general feeling at the time was that as long as Tulsa remained tied to SMU and Rice that everything would be fine."

The problem with these statements is that he assumes SMU WANTS to be tied wiith Rice and Utep. Uh, no we don't. Unfortunately for the Hurricane, they backed the wrong horse. No one really wants to be tied to Rice and Utep might as well be in another state. Tulsa is a good program, but seems they have no ambition to move up (at least from this article). Stay with Rice and Tulane and Utep. We will go to Big East.

Tulsa is really the school I would feel worst about leaving behind. They have the smallest undergrad enrollment in FBS, and they really have a pretty respectable history in both football and basketball. Unfortunately they're stuck in Tulsa, which is desirable to nobody.

Something tells me this possible/probable move to the BE has less to do with our current football performance than everyone thinks. The writer plays the geography card on who should be moving to the BE. My theory, is this has more to do with being in Dallas, and not being located in Tulsa, El Paso, Hattiesburg or Greenville. Showing we are willing and committed to take the next step is what puts us over the edge. Beating TCU just helps the publics mind, but I doubt had very little impact on the BE decision. They already knew. Beating UCF again just helps the general public but had no effect. Tulsa and all they have accomplished on the football field just is not in an attractive location. They bring very little to the table. Like others have said they also chose to tie their wagon up to Tulane, Rice and UTEP. That's like tying a concrete cinder block around your ankles and expecting to swim. Baylor just better be extremely thankful they caught the break to get into the B12 when they did, otherwise they would be sitting in the same seat as Tulsa.

i can't disagree but if we had been in our cavan/bennett years there is no way we would have been considered. someone posted that the be called the day after we beat tcu. things really started happening after that game. with june and the direction of this team we are now on the map.

you're right, a lot of this is luck of location and affiliation. Orlando, Houston & Dallas are HUGE TV markets, the academies are HUGE TV draws, and well, Boise St is #5 right now and bring some BCS cred (and the state of Idaho).

As a Tulsa native, I root for the Golden Hurricane 11 games a year, and them being left behind is the only thing that makes this imminent BE move bittersweet to me. They have a great program and awesome fans, but being the third team in a tiny state that already has two athletics giants makes for tough business.

Their football future seems unclear as they don't totally fit with any of the current conferences, so they are probably stuck in the MWC/CUSA by default. I do think, however, that they should do whatever they can to get back in the MVC for all other sports. I know they still have ties there because of playing soccer with them, and I would say that that's a much more solid basketball conference with teams that are closer to them both geographically and in size/academics than many of the remaining CUSA schools.

I understand your predicament. It gets tough to be a fan, in general, when you know that money/location/TV market/etc. has more to do with college football now than how a team performs on the field.
