ESPN Bias

Post by ponyinNC »

Wow, watching BCS countdown, and on the bottom line comes "C-USA has more teams (2) in BCS Top 25 than Big East (1)." And they proceed to pick bowl teams and the experts make note that BCS "has to include Big East champ, but not one in top 25, so we'll pick Cincinatti." They scoff and laugh.

The bias being shown by ESPN is getting more and more ruthless. It is undeniable now, really.

Whats the bias? The big east is not a good football conference this year (again).

the timing is just too good to be true. Big 12 has had bad years, Pac 10 definitely did too...and I never saw this wrath by espn then. And now propping up CUSA as world beaters?

as cris carter should say, "c'mon man!!!"

and yet TCU was running to join...

bad year? yes. but for espn to focus on it so heavily, when other have had same type years, is weak.

The bug east has struggled for several years to produce a truly worthy BCS team. I think the mwc was better than the big east the last few years so I have never defended the big east as a strong football conference. There are still legitimate reasons to join but the quality of football in the league is way behind the other bcs conferences imho.

ESPN will talk down the Big East and its additions with every chance it gets because they are going to make another offer on the TV rights after this is done...and they want to get those rights for as little as possible. So, it's in ESPN's best interest to create a negative public perception of the conference.

ESPN has been pulling a lot of strings to get what they want. I really don't like Mike Leach, but he made a lot of fair points when interviewed by the Ticket several weeks back when he was in town to do a book signing. The article that someone posted on here about the corruption in the bowl game finances also seemed to raise questions about ESPN in my mind. They seem to be trying to control sports vs. just reporting on it. Sad, actually.

I wish we could all ignore ESPN, and watch Fox sports. They act professional, even when we are getting blow out they are still kind enough to say that we have so much potential and we just arent showing it the past two games. If I had to choose networks: Fox, CBS, anything else, ESPN. I mean its cool to be on ESPN no doubt but they must be getting checks that say bad mouth everyone but SEC, Big 12, Big 10, Pac 12, ACC. I mean thats ridiculous. Just support all the conferences and say that everyone can have their days. Obviously if unranked texas tech can waltz in and beat #3 OU, it must mean any team can have their shot.

The big east will be hammered for one or 2 years after we entere, but once our new recruits that wanted to join with the AQ in hand will start turning some people's heads.

This. The BE turned down ESPN's last contract offer. The Big East was their whipping boy to be scheduled any day of the week but Saturday. If they go to another network this means direct competition with what ESPN is showing. Better start saying they are irrelevant now so no one will want to watch them. If ESPN does not get the BE contract, be sure to expect them front and center in a crusade to take away the BE BCS status.

Conference strength comes and goes, the ACC only has 3 teams in the top 25 (none in the top 10). The "new" BE has two (Boise and UH) in the top 25 with one of those in the top 10. If Cinci continues on its path there should be three in the top 25. ESPN is just doing what it does, the BE is fine and will be stronger BCS conference post realignment. Pitt and Syracuse are not standout teams we are losing, and WVU is a fool to leave. Boise brings a lot of credibility/points. UCF, and SMU are on their way up. AFA and Navy are great adds (hopefully Army will follow). BYU should also be a great addition if everything works out. The Big East will be fine, but expect more nonsense from ESPN.

How many Big East bowls do they have or at least broadcast? All of them?

I think a lot of you are right on. As far a stronger football but weaker bball, I think you will see a few other teams get into the mix for bball. One team that keeps getting brought up is Memphis. If the are able to bring them in you have a another quality program joining the fold. Other teams that will be directly targeted by the Big East for bball would be St. Joe's, Xavier, Rhode Island, possibly Temple due to their biggest cheerleader, Rick Pitino. The UCF program will now garnish more attention due to the Jorden boys. Losing WVU, Cuse, Pitt are all tragic in terms of the utter dominance that the Big East has had in BBALL the last couple of years. While I don't see that league getting 11 teams into the tourny, I do think that 8 - or - 9 isn't out of the realm. Still a very heavy BBALL conference.

It is really funny to see ponyfans become the biggest BE cheerleader. Look back 6 months when TCU was still going BE and SMU wasn't even in the discussion. We were putting down the BE every chance we got, now they are better than the ACC and Pac 12? I think if all things fall into place it will be a strong football conference, but right now it is clearly at the bottom of the AQ totem pole.
