Homecoming Sign theft! Shame on you UP!!!
I was just driving down my street behind snider plaza and University Park Code enforcement vehicle was pulling up SMU Homecoming signs!!!!! I stopped him and asked for all of them. He instucted me they could not be placed in the "parkway". This is bull [deleted] it was on private property on people's lawns. Shame on you University Park Shame on you!!!

UP is a great town. Yes, they do go overboard sometimes with the regs, but it's very well run.
Here's what gets me. That sign is property that they cannot just take. They need to knock on the door and give the property owner the chance to correct the mistake.

WHOA, HOLD ON. let me clarify something for you guys. the 4' piece of grass from the street to the sidewalk IS city property. the homeowner is required to maintain it, but the city owns it. next time you see a survey done, it starts at the sidewalk and goes back from there.
so they are w/n their right to pull those.
If residents placed them in THEIR yard (between the sidewalk and the house) that's a different story, but probably not the case.
can't have political signs in that space out by the street either.
it's my guess that someone put these out unauthorized and a resident called to complain. just a guess though. this has nothing to do with being "a good neighbor" and everything to do with enforcement. UP & HP aren't selective with the regs/laws they enforce which is one of the many reasons why people pay a premium to live there. no signs littering the parkway about "investment properties for sale" or "Date Dallas Singles.com" or any of the other stuff. this one just hits closer to our passion. There can and should be a concerted effort by the school to promote in and around the park cities, and once we have a larger budget when we join the big east, we will.

Re: Homecoming Sing theft! Shame on you UP!!!
Where exactly where the signs? I have seen signs in peoples lawns plenty of times in UP. Unless they a specifically blocking public property I doubt they can simply be taken or even touched. Seems like a notice would be given, then a fine, then action. Great having signs on University BLVD for people driving into campus for games.
Dutch's explanation seems like the most reasonable.
UP residents do like to act as if they lived there first and SMU just showed up, but this is probably just a zoning issue.

Good info, Dutch. But even still you don't just pull the signs and throw them away.

University Park began as a cluster of homes surrounding the fledgling Southern Methodist University, which was founded in the then-rural Dallas County in 1915. The university supplied these homes with utility service until 1924, when the growing population could no longer be supported by the school’s utilities.

and I thought this was all about some song being stolen ...
SING theft
BTW Dutch is correct the "Parkway" (area between curb and sidewalk) is always City Property.

I am now picturing Orsini patrolling the neighborhood with the honey badger chasing off cops stealing signs.

Re: Homecoming Sing theft! Shame on you UP!!!
Some excited SMU alumni/student probably when up and down the block planting a bunch of these in the aforementioned "parkway". In one of those houses lived a grumpy Florida graduate who didn't want anything resembling SMU on his lawn, saw it was on the parkway instead of his lawn, so instead of removing it from his, called in the complaint. It's okay/I hope the signs can be recovered. We're all kinda new at this winning/promoting SMU Football stuff. Maybe next year we tell or staple a reminder for people picking up their signs to not put them on the parkway, or else they'll be removed. Again, everyone's learning.
