Surgery means early end to season
Defensive end Kevin Grenier confirmed Wednesday that surgery he had last week on his left shoulder means his 2011 season is over.
Grenier, a senior from Tucson, Ariz., underwent a procedure to mend a tear in his labrum. He had the same procedure done in January, 2010, on the labrum in his right shoulder. The recovery from that surgery took "a few months," Grenier said, meaning his 2011 season is over.
Grenier played as a true freshman in 2008 and has not used a redshirt year. He said he is unsure whether he will be able to earn a medical waiver for an extra year of eligibility in 2012.

Re: Surgery means early end to season
Didn't someone from Hawaii say that Mel DeLaura had a history of torn labrums with his players? Grenier, Thompson, Hunt...... This could be a problem.

The issue was raised, then refuted by Garrett. In the same thread, RGV Pony explained the mechanism of labrum injuries, suggesting it is not related to weight-lifting regimens.

Labrum injuries are usually from falling on an outstretched arm or an overhead motion like serving a tennis ball or throwing etc.
Here's a full article on the hypothesis of football-related and/or weightlifting related mechanism of labrum injury..one thing it discusses is another possible mechanism, that is engaging a blocker much the same way our DEs do, that is "The proposed mechanism of injury was blocking of an opponent when the shoulder is positioned in 90° of flexion with the elbows locked. With contact, the shoulder undergoes a posteriorly directed force leading to a significant shearing force that is transferred to the posterior labrum":

According to SMU Participation Stats, he's played in 4 games which is technically more than 3 allowed for medical redshirt.

Don't know Stallion. I heard (not sure) that they increased to 30%. The 20% rule allowed you to round up. If that is still in place then 30% of 12 is 3.6 which rounds up to 4. Again I am not sure about the 30% rule but I am certain that under the 20% rule you could round up to 3 games from 2.4.
The games do have to have been played within a certain part of the beginning of the season. I do not know when he last played and if he exceeded that limit either.

Re: Surgery means early end to season
I checked and it says FEWER than 30% of his regular season games so wouldn't that be 3 games-it always has been 3 games for a 12 game schedule. His last game was TCU which was in first half of season

When I looked into the rule 2 or 3 years ago it stated no more than 20% of the games and they had to have been played in the first 1/2 of the season. They allowed rounding up on the 20% which allowed for 3 games at the 20%. If it has been raised to 30% and nothing else has changed, then it should be 4 games on a 12 game season. Again, I am basing this on nothing changing other than 20% to 30%.

Re: Surgery means early end to season
hmm mrydel might be right based on this analysis-skip down to the football example of a 12 game schedule toward bottom which says you round up to 4 permissible games. Looks like we should have an extra DE next year

Re: Surgery means early end to season
I don't know if the rule has changed or not, but I was lead to believe that players can participate in four games and still apply for a medical waiver. Don't know if I'm right or not, but for Kevin's sake, I hope I am.
Thanks, PP.
